SPORTS SHORTS 271: CHARLY SUAREZ DOMINATES DELMAR PELLIO IN A BATTLE OF UNDEFEATED FIGHTERS

Charly Suarez proved why he is a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist by dominating previously unbeaten Delmar Pellio, 99-89, 99-89, 100-88 in the “Ultimate Knockout Challenge” on Saturday, December 4 at the Elorde Sports Center in Parañaque City.

Suarez almost blanked Pellio who won only one round in one scorecard in a 10-round super featherweight bout yesterday. Suarez was a gold medalist in the SEA Games held in Laos in 2009, Jakarta in 2011 and Manila in 2019.

Suarez intimidated Pellio who was sluggish after two years of inactivity in a boxing card which also features another undefeated Filipino boxer in Carl Jammes Martin, the WBO Oriental Youth bantamweight titlist and the WBA Asia bantamweight title holder.

Martin seized the Philippine super bantamweight title from veteran Mark Anthony Geraldo with scores of 117-111, 115-113, 115-113. Geraldo proved to be his toughest foe so far.

Martin (18-0, 15 KOs), age 22 years of Lagawe, Ifugao used an attack and evade technique against Geraldo of Kibawe, Bukidnon. Geraldo (38-10-3, 19 KOs) is the only fighter who defeated IBF junior bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.

Michael Dasmariñas fought Ernesto Saulong but the bout ended in a technical draw in the second round. Dasmariñas won the first round but an accidental head butt on Saulong caused a deep cut, causing the ring physician to ask the referee to stop the bout at 1:12 of the second stanza.

Dasmariñas, who was knocked out by Japanese unified bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue in the third round on June 20, now has a record of 30-3-2 card with 20 KOs. Saulong is 22-7-3 with 9 KOs.

“They say you’re no longer at your peak when you hit 30 years old but my mindset is I’m just getting started,” Suarez was quoted by Inquirer Sports.

The 33-year-old Suarez (9-0, 6KOs) from San Isidro, Davao del Norte, fought his pro debut just two years ago in 2019, risked his undefeated record against also then unbeaten Pellio (9-1, 4KOs).

Suarez, who represented the Philippines in the 2016 Rio Olympics, now targets to fight a regional title and hopefully a crack at the world title as he impressively keeps his winning track record.

“My dream continues as a boxer. I will do my best to win to add to my record,” said Suarez before the fight, as he revealed that he kept on training even during the Covid-19 lockdowns. "I never stopped training even when the pandemic started. That’s why I’ve been able to maintain my weight,” he said.

He anticipated a tough tussle with his opponent prior to the match. "I’ve studied Pellio. He’s young and undefeated also. He also wants to beat me so this is going to be a good fight.”

The orthodox fighter Suarez alias "King's Warrior" has already fought 46 rounds with66.67% KO rate per BoxRec.

Suarez, called "King's Warrior" was busy preparing for his coming professional fight in an exclusive training ground in Taguig City. But he is also looking forward to winning gold medals and giving glory to the country in the coming Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games next year.

“The training in pro boxing and amateur is different, but it’s easy to make the adjustment because I fought as an amateur for a long time. That is where I began my career,’’ Suarez told the Philippine Sportswriters Association.

Suarez was invited by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) to represent the national boxing team in the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, on May 12 to 23.

ABAP president Ed Picson said the former Rio Olympian will undergo the regular training procedure under the national boxing association to qualify for a slot in the national team for the SEA Games.

“I just have to make those necessary adjustments. The coaches know the training program that I should go through. It will all depend on how I will adopt and implement the program,’’ said Suarez.

The 2014 Asian Games silver medalist will transform himself from 10 rounds in the pros to a shorter three-round exercise where speed and accuracy are given more points than powerful blows.

“Every professional fighter dreams of becoming a world champion. This dream fuels me to keep on going. I have more things to learn as a pro boxer,’’ said Suarez.

But Suarez is also very excited to win the gold medal in the SEA Games, the Asian Games and even in the Olympics. It inspired him to go back to the amateurs, where he started his love for boxing and established a name.

“I spent 15 years as an amateur and I thank the ABAP, the officials, coaches and my fellow boxers for the things that I learned. It’s always an honor to fight for our country,’’ said Suarez.

If he comes out successful in the coming SEA Games, Suarez will focus his training for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on September 10 to 25, and then the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Paris Olympics will follow.
