A date is set for the much-awaited, long-overdue rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. It’s on Sept. 19 and the fight will be a 12-rounder at the 18,600-seat Sphere in Las Vegas. Details are still being finalized at the moment with no certainty if a title will be on the line. Pacquiao was recently appointed vice president of the International Boxing Association (IBA) and there’s a possibility that the return fight, to be streamed around the world by Netflix, will stake the vacant IBA welterweight crown.
Pacquiao withheld confirming the bout the other day and said he’ll wait for Mayweather to announce it. Mayweather will reportedly formalize the fight sometime this week and if he does, it will come at the heels of his decision to un-retire after an exhibition with Mike Tyson, tentatively on April 25. Mayweather, who turned 49 yesterday, retired in 2005, 2015 and 2017 so it isn’t a surprise that he’ll be back in the ring to engage Pacquiao, 11 years after their first encounter.
Mayweather’s last official fight was in 2017 when he stopped MMA star Conor McGregor. Two years before, he outpointed Pacquiao in a 12-rounder whose outcome was debatable. Pacquiao battled with an injured right shoulder from the fourth round and despite the handicap, appeared to get the better of Mayweather. With the rematch, they will settle the score once and for all. Pacquiao is now 47 and Mayweather, 49 but both fighters remain crowd-drawers. They’ll sell out the Sphere for sure.
Mayweather is protective of his pristine record and he’s taking a risk in facing Pacquiao who’s out to taint that 50-0 mark. Pacquiao and Mayweather are both Hall of Famers but the Filipino icon has held world titles in more weight divisions, eight to five. They’ll be fighting for legacy, prestige and of course, money. Mayweather likes to be called Money and was once said to have earned over $1.2 billion in his career. Another big payday is coming up.
