Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez stamped his name as one of the greatest Mexican boxers of all time and arguably the No. 1 pound for pound boxer of the planet by knocking down Caleb Plant twice en route to a 11th round stoppage to become the first unified super middleweight champion in history at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

Caleb Plant showed his championship mettle early in the fight by dishing up fast combos and great defense but as the fight wore on Canelo began to dictate the tempo connecting with power shots that damped Plant's aggressiveness. Canelo later pummeled Plant's body with wicked shots that took out the fight from Plant.

In the fateful 11th round, sensing the Plant was already hurt, Canelo went in for the kill. He attacked Plant with a series of power shots highlighted with a right uppercut that sent Plant to the canvas for the first time. Plant beat the count but it was obvious that the end is just moments away. Canelo later ended the fight with another series of power shots that sent Plant flat on his back for good. Time: 1:05 of the 11th round.

Canelo is now 57-1-2 with 39 KOs while Plant absorbed the first defeat of his career and went down 21-1-0, 12KOs.
