SPORTS SHORTS 235: NINE KNOCKDOWNS IN THREE TYSON FURY-DEONTAY WILDER CLASSIC TRILOGY FIGHTS

Tyson Fury defeated Deontay Wilder for the second straight time in their third trilogy fight with a knockout at 1:10 in the 11th round on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada.

It thrilled the live audience of 15,820 that saw one of the best heavyweight fights that happened for years now.

Fury, the World Boxing Council and The Ring heavyweight champion, went down twice in the fourth round and Wilder was knocked down once early in the third round and again in the 10th round when Fury sent the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist crashing to the canvas with a big right hand and pummeled him the rest of the round.

Fury dropped Wilder with a thundering right hand in the 11th, causing referee Russell Mora to stop the fight at 1:10, awarding Fury the TKO win and a 2-0-1 advantage in their classic trilogy fights.

Fury started slow in the opening round but recovered by flooring Wilder in the third round. Wilder retaliated by knocking down Fury twice in the fourth round, but had struggled in the middle rounds as he ran out of gas.

Wilder fought more fiercely and showed much improvement from the previous fight and targeted Fury's body in the early stages of the bout. However, a powerful right from Fury hit Wilder's head in the 11th round and it caused the stoppage of the fight.

Fury won the WBC title from Wilder in their second encounter and defended it successfully in their trilogy fight. Wilder now has lost the last two fights of his career.

In their three fights, Fury knocked Wilder down five times and Wilder floored Fury four times. In the first fight Fury went down in rounds 9 and 12. In the second fight, Fury dropped Wilder in the third round and in the fifth round.

“It was a tough fight and he came in really determined,” said Fury. “I’ve always said I’m the best heavyweight in the world and he’s the second-best.”

Fury improved his record to 31 wins, 22 knockout victories with no defeat, by winning Saturday's brutal “all out war”. Fury is the third heavyweight champion, after Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali, to hold The Ring magazine title twice, and is the current lineal heavyweight champion.

Wilder's record fell to 42 wins, 2 losses which are all dealt by Fury, and 2 draws. He has knocked out 41 of his opponents. Only Canadian Bermane Stiverne survived with a unanimous decision loss on January 17, 2015.

The two heavyweight giants fought to a pulverising draw during their first fight in Los Angeles in 2018, when Fury survived a smashing 12th round knockdown after outpounting Wilder in most rounds of the fight.

Fury then defeated Wilder in February last year by a seventh-round knockout that finished Wilder’s five-year reign as WBC champion and blemished his previous undefeated record.

Before last Saturday, one of the two have fought since their last fight 20 months ago, and Fury was forced to cancel on the most awaited match with former WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua after an arbitrator ruled that Wilder was entitled to a rematch for a third fight.

What's next for Tyson Fury? He made a plan for his next fight after Wilder, and the name of Dillian Whyte appeared on his list. Whyte will be Fury’s mandatory challenger if Whyte beats Otto Wallin on October 30.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed on Saturday that Anthony Joshua has initiated his rematch clause with Oleksadr Usyk and Usyk-Joshua 2 will happen next spring.

Usyk accepted the rematch clause which was not required, but the camp of Joshua asked for it and the Usyk team agreed it also. Joshua could not set aside the rematch because he still guaranteed a big purse and a chance to win back his titles.

The WBC ordered that the Fury-Wilder winner had to fight either Usyk or the Whyte-Wallin winner next. It’s not going to be Usyk, so the Whyte-Wallin winner is most probably the next.

Deontay Wilder held the WBC heavyweight title from 2015 to 2020, doing 10 successful defenses. In winning the title, Wilder became the first American world heavyweight champion since 2004, after eleven years, which was the longest period in boxing history without an American heavyweight champion.

Tyson Fury is a two-time world heavyweight champion, when held the WBC and The Ring magazine titles since defeating Deontay Wilder in 2020. He was previously the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring title holder after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.
