PACQUIAO-UGÁS VIRTUAL PRESSER SET TOMORROW

A virtual press conference of the unexpected matchup between Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao and WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugás has been scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021 at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT (Thursday, 1 a.m. in the Philippines).

Ugás, from Cuba, replaced Errol Spence Jnr as Pacquiao's opponent on Aug. 21 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas after Spence was found out to have a retinal tear on the left eye during the pre-fight medical examination.

Pacquiao and Ugás have something to settle between themselves after the WBA stripped Pacquiao's super champion status and awarded it to Ugás without a fight. Pacquiao captured the WBA regular welterweight championship belt by defeating Lucas Matthysse in July 2018 in Kuala Lumpur and became the WBA super welterweight champion when he defeated Keith Thurman one year later in July 2019 in Las Vegas. Ugás captured the WBA regular welterweight belt left vacant by Pacquiao by defeating Abel Ramos in Sep. 2020 in Los Angeles.

The WBA designated Pacquiao as 'champion in recess' (doublespeak for stripping his title) in Jan. 2021 for the reason of inactivity and then awarded the title to Ugás without a fight. Pacquiao requested his title back from the WBA after the Spence fight was signed last May but was denied by the WBA.

The Aug. 21 welterweight battle will decide of who really is the top dog in the WBA hierarchy of dubious championship belts.
