Eumir Marcial made an explosive Olympic debut as he stopped Younes Nemouchi of Algeria late in the first round of their men’s middleweight bout in the round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics at the Kokugikan Arena.

Marcial scored an early knockdown before the fight was called off due to a cut above Nemouchi’s right eye. One more win and Marcial, a top gold medal bet in his division, will be assured at least of a bronze medal.

The 25-year-old Marcial scored a quick stoppage of Nemouchi when he pummeled his foe in the very first round, connecting solid blows and sending signal to the middleweights in Tokyo that he is serious in winning the second gold medal for the Philippines.

The referee interfered to stop the contest with 19 seconds left in the first round because of a bad cut above Nemouchi's right eye causing blood to flow. Marcial entered the quarterfinals and will face Arman Darchinyan of Armenia on Sunday August 1.

It has been 13 years since Armenia won an Olympic medal in the sport of boxing and Arman Darchinyan is among a trio of Armenian boxers who will try to end the drought in Tokyo.
* * *
The 27-year-old boxer qualified in June following a good showing in the 2020 European Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament.
* * *
He is from Vanadzor, Armenia now living in Los Angeles, California and is the nephew of former two-division world champion Vic "Raging Bull" Darchinyan whom Nonito Donaire knocked out twice and dethroned. Like Marcial he has one professional fight, winning against Kendall Mayes Taylor of Los Angeles by second round TKO.

Marcial had defeated Darchinyan at the Konstantin Korotkov Memorial International Boxing Tournament on May 20, 2018 in the middleweight (75 kg) finals.

“I’ve already faced Darchinyan before back in 2018 in Russia. I beat him there but of course, everyone prepared really hard for the Olympics. I know he is really prepared for his fight,” Marcial was quoted by Inquirer Sports.

Darchinyan also easily trounced Slovakia’s Andrej Csemez for a unanimous decision win in the round of 16. He has compiled a 23-16, 2 KOs amateur record per BoxRec. Marcial has an amateur record of 69-18, 16 KOs.

Irish Magno became the first Filipino boxer to lose in the Tokyo Olympics after being outpointed by Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand in the women’s flyweight round of 16 on Thursday.
* * *
Magno had difficulty penetrating the defense of Jitpong, whose counterpunches were effectively connected on the Filipina for the Thai to score a unanimous decision.
* * *
Jitpong got a revenge at Magno, who won over Jitpong in the semifinals in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila.

Juvic Pagunsan had a good start, registering 5-under-par in the first round of the men’s individual golf competition on Thursday at Kasumigaseki Country Club.
* * *
The three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist is a veteran professional in the Asian scene and spent more time in the Japan Golf Tour and his familiarity with the country was a big plus.

Joseph Schooling, the Singaporean swimmer who was the gold medalist in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympics, won his country's first ever Olympic gold medal. His winning time of 50.39 seconds broke multiple records at National, Southeast Asian, Asian and Olympic level.

Schooling did not have an impressive Olympic start when he finished 49.84 seconds in the men's 100m freestyle heats on Tuesday. He was not able to advance to Wednesday's semi-final as one of the top 16 swimmers. He finished 39th out of the 70 competitors. But he hopes to perform well in his favorite 100m butterfly.
