The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has ordered its super champion Terrence Crawford to face No. 2 contender Shawn Porter as per a letter sent Wednesday by WBO Championship Committee chairman Luis Batista Salas to Bob Arum's Top Rank, Crawford's promoter and Tom Brown of TGB Promotions who work for Al Haymon' Premier Boxing Champion, Porter's promoter.
LINK to Batista-Salas's letter.
According to the letter, both parties have to finalize the negotiations within 30 days otherwise if no deal is reached a purse bid will be ordered which will open up other promoters to bid for the fight.
Allowing the fight to proceed to a purse bid would be risky as Top Rank has learned when it lost the rights to its lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez fighting against George Kambosos which Triller gobbled up with a bid of more $6 million.
Just because the fight has been ordered there is no guarantee that the fight will happen. For one, Crawford's relationship with Top Rank has soured lately where Arum publicly castigated Crawford for not helping sell his fights. Crawford was also greatly resentful to his promoter that the Pacquiao fight did not happen. There is a perception that Crawford will have its contract lapse which will expire in October, 2021.
It is also hard to imagine Crawford giving up his welterweight belt just to spite Top Rank. Porter, on the other hand, surely will not pass up the opportunity to again challenge for a world title.
All things considered, as the Crawford-Porter is a highly marketable fight, Crawford might have his farewell fight with Top Rank against Porter.
