NOYNAY DROPS WILSON 4 TIMES EN ROUTE TO 5TH ROUND STOPAGE TO KEEP WBO ASIA-PACIFIC BELT

Cebu City -- Bogo's pride Joe Noynay, out of the ring for 20 months, fashioned out an impressive performance by dropping four times and stopping local rising star Liam Wilson in the 5th round to retain his WBO Asia-Pacific super featherweight belt Wednesday night at the Newcastle Entertainment Center in Newcastle, Australia on the main undercard of the Tim Tszyu vs Steve Sparks middleweight fight.
Southpaw Noynay started fast who immediately threw a left straight at Wilson from the get go although he missed it. Showing good footwork and fast counters, Noynay controlled the tempo of the fight. Midway through the round Wilson switched to a southpaw stance which could have been an unwise decision as he was later caught by Noynay's left cross to the temple that sent him down to the canvas for the first time.
In the second round, Wilson, who racked up four victories during the pandemic to improve his undefeated record to nine wins with 6 knockouts, became more aggressive and caught Noynay with rights several times. In the third, Wilson continued his attack as Noynay tried to time the Aussie with his counters.
Referee Phil Austin waves off his hands to signal the end of the bout as Wilson was down for the 4th time courtesy of a Joe Noynay left.
In the 4th round however, Noynay started connecting again and dropped Wilson again with his vaunted left hand. This time, Wilson seemed hurt but showed a lot of heart by beating the count and continued to fight. Moments later, Noynay sent Wilson again to the canvas badly hurt. He beat the count again as Referee Phil Austin allowed him to continue.
The 5th round was anti-climax as Wilson was obviously fighting only on sheer guts and instint as Noynay was pouring it in. Finally, towards the end of the round, Noynay, nicknamed the 'Jaw Breaker' caught Wilson with a long straight left to the jaw to put him down for good.
Noynay thus improved his record to 19-2-2 with 8KOs. Wilson absorbed his first defeat and dropped to 9-1-0, 6KOs.
