SPORTS SHORTS 148: NAOYA INOUE WANTS TO KNOCK MICHAEL DASMARIÑAS OUT

Promoter Hideyuki Ohashi wants his boxer Naoya Inoue to knock out Filipino mandatory challenger Michael Dasmariñas when they battle at the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 19 so that Inoue can get more publicity and live up to his billing as the Japanese "Monster."

"I want you to surprise American fans with the overwhelming knockout that seems to be a monster. I want you to show me a great knockout," Ohashi told Inoue in an online press conference.

Inoue's father and trainer, Shingo, said Dasmariñas punches hard and has a solid defense but cited that his son can destroy it with little trouble. "I'm not worried about anything," said Shingo.

For the first time in his career, he will be fighting a tall southpaw with a deadly knockout rate. Inoue said his training is very rigid and he would be able to defend and counter precisely his opponent's maneuvers and punches.

At 5-foot-7, Dasmariñas is two inches taller than Inoue, The Filipino challenger has a record of 30-2-1 with 20 knockouts. Inoue is unblemished at 20-0 with 17 knockouts.

"I want to show a different boxing than usual," said Inoue whose latest victory was an impressive seventh-round knockout over Australian Jason Moloney in October last year after his unanimous decision win over now WBC world bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire in November 2019.

Aside from Donaire he has beaten three other Filipino opponents: Warlito Parrenas by 2nd round TKO in 2015, Jerson Mancio by 5th round TKO in 2013, and Crison Omayao 4th round KO in 2012.

After his magnificent victory over Nordine Oubaali, Donaire made his statement to face Inoue. “[I want] the best out there. I want a rematch with Inoue and get all the belts…,” said Donaire during a press conference. “Get the belt and put ’em all together.”

Per oddschecker.com, bookmakers have listed Inoue as a incredible -3333 favorite, meaning a $3,333 bet on Inoue earns just $100. Dasmariñas was a +1200 underdog, meaning a $100 bet on him earns $1,200.

According to Dasmariñas' manager, Art Monis, the massive underdog tag would motivate his boxer more to go vigorously in the final phase of his training under former world champion Tacy Macalos at the famous Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

Inoue, age 28 years, from Zama, Kanagawa, Japan, is a three-weight world champion and currently a unified bantamweight world champion, being the WBA (Super), IBF, and Ring magazine titlist since 2019. He also held the WBO junior-bantamweight title from 2014 to 2018, and the WBC light-flyweight title in 2014.

He is ranked as the world's best bantamweight by BoxRec and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board (TBRB), and is ranked as the world's second best boxer, pound for pound, by the The Ring, TBRB and third by ESPN.

Inoue's amateur record was 75–6 (48 KOs and RSCs). In July 2011, he won the gold medal in the 21st President's Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Dasmariñas, aged 28 years, was born in Pili, Camarines Sur. His championship match with Inoue will be his biggest career fight, as he has not challenged yet for a world title in the four major boxing bodies.

In a YouTube post, Dasmariñas said his chance of winning against Inoue depends on his ability to land the solid punch first. "Whoever hurts the other first is likely to win," said Dasmariñas.

Ricky Hatton, who was stopped by Floyd Mayweather in 2007, was not elated with the Mayweather exhibition with YouTuber Logan Paul. "[What the f**k] was all this about? What happened to the days where fighters would put their lives on the line to try be the best and at least fight the best," Hatton posted on Twitter.

"Now we have fighters calling out YouTubers as that's where the most money is these days due to the social media world we live in??? I can live with an exhibition like [what] Mike [Tyson] and Roy [Jones Jr] did between two legends of our sport."

Filipina-Japanese Yuka Saso could be the additional Olympian for the Philippines after rising up in the Women's World Golf Rankings Monday. The 19-year-old golfer won the 76th U.S. Women’s Open golf championship. She tied with South Korea’s Inbee Park as the youngest player to win the US tournament.

From No. 40, Saso surged all the way to No. 9, virtually qualifying for a berth at the Tokyo Olympics. Those who finish in the top 60 in the rankings for each in the men's and women's divisions will earn a slot to the Tokyo Olympics.

The Brooklyn Nets are playing the Milwaukee Bucks without superstar guard James Harden, who left Game 1 of the series just seconds into the game with a hamstring injury. The Nets won Game 1, 115-107 without Harden who played just one minute.

Game 2 will be played on Monday in Brooklyn, where Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving will try to grab the 2-0 lead without their third superstar Harden. Durant and Irving combined for 54 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists in Game 1 while Blake Griffin contributed 18 points and 14 rebounds.
