Lemen’s heroics save the day for Manileños

The Manila Indios Bravos survived an all-out assault from their Visayan rivals Negros Kingsmen with an 11-10 nail-biting match at the start of the 2nd phase of elimination round of the All Filipino Conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament on Saturday (February 6, 2021) at the lichess platform.

Its was Arena Grandmaster Glenn Lemen’s heroics that saved the day for the Manileños with his upset victories over International Master Joel Pimentel.

The former De La Salle University (DLSU) standout Lemen defeated Pimentel, ex player of College of St. Benilde, both in blitz and rapid on board 5.

Lemen toppled Pimentel after 77 moves of Mieses Opening in the Blitz portion and prevailed after 45 moves of Philidor Defense, Hanham Variation in the Rapid play.

"It was a tough match," said 8-time, Chicago, Illinois, USA champion International Master Angelo Young, who held a draw with National Master Rolzon Roullo on board 6.

In other results, International Master John Marvin Miciano beat Fide Master Randy Segarra, 2.5-0.5, on board 1 as well International Master Chris Ramayrat toppled National Master Rosendo Bandal, 2-1, on board 4.

The Kingsmen, meantime, were led by Fide Master Nelson "Elo" Mariano III, Arena Grandmaster Rowelyn Joy "Kajoy" Acedo and Adrian Dela Cruz into victory that made up for the loss of their teammates.

Mariano crushed US master Ryan Dungca, 2.5-0.5, on board 2, Acedo nipped Woman Candidate Master Mira Mirano, 2-1, on board 3 while Dela Cruz defeated Candidate Master Genghis Imperial, 2.5-0.5, on board 7.

The Indios Bravos prevailed in the Blitz portion, 4-3, but the rapids ending in 7-7 tie according to Manila Indios Bravos Team Manager Joey Paulo Elauria.

Manila remains in fourth place at 9-4 in the Northern Division standings while the Kingsmen remains sharing the top of the Southern Division standings with an 11-2 win-loss record.
Earlier, the Manila Indios Bravos trounced Mindoro Elgin Tamaraws, 12.5-8.5.

Each player competes in blitz or rapid chess every match. A win in rapid chess is worth 2 points, while victory in blitz chess is 1 point. A draw in rapid chess is one point, while it's half a point in blitz chess.

The 24-team tournament is organized by PCAP, headed by Chairman Michael Angelo Chua and President/Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria.

The tournament is being sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra and supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.-Marlon Bernardino-
