Abelgas wins Espana Chess Club Manila

TOP-SEED International Master elect and Fide Master Roel Abelgas of Dasmarinas City, Cavite lived up to expectations by crowning himself champion of the 23rd Edition of Espana Chess Club Manila Bullet Swiss Arena held at lichess platform.

He defeated National Master engineer Robert Arellano in the twelve and final round to finish with a total of 10.5 points and claim the title in the online chess event, hosted by Engineer Ernie Fetisan Faeldonia, president of the organizing Espana Chess Club Manila.

FM Abelgas, the top player and coach of Dasmarinas Chess Academy under the guidance of Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., captures his first crown in the said chessfest. The event was played via lichess.com with a time control of 2 minutes & zero increments participated by 92 all Filipino players.

FM Abelgas bested Yves Christian Fiel (10 pts.), National Master Elwin Retanal (9.5 pts), Leonico Arden Abiad (8.5 pts.) and National Master Julius Sinangote (8.5 pts.) who occupied the next four places.

Rounding up the top 10 were Reymond Baon ( 8 pts.), engineer Joel Hicap (8 pts.), Stevenson Garong (7.5 pts.), National Master engineer Robert Arellano (7.5 pts.) and Narciso Gayares (7.5 pts.).

Adjudged category winners were Treysha Ann Flores (top 2000 ), Vincent Brimbuela ( top 1800 ), Allan Gabriel Hilario (top kiddie ) and Woman International Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda (top lady ).-Marlon Bernardino-
