Garcia wins Balinas-Pichay online chess tourney

International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia of Manila won the Grandmaster (GM) and Attorney (Atty) Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. and Mayor Maria Carla Lopez Pichay online chess tournament on Sunday, December 27, 2020.

Garcia, IM Nyxnyxnyxnyxnyx on Lichess, finished with 101 points in 41 games for a win rate of 68 percent and performance rating of 2679 to win the event that drew 725 players worldwide.

The P75,000 total prize fund event was presented by Lichess Battle Arena, hosted by US based frontliner Dr. Joe Balinas and Engr. Antonio "Uncle Paps" Balinas, both founding Honorary Chairman of the organizing Bayanihan Chess Club, backed up by GM Rosendo Balinas and family, in close cooperation with NCFP Chairman/President Deputy Speaker Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. and Mr. Fernan Donguines of Hybreed Apparel Collections.

The online tournament had time control of two minutes and players must win as many games in two hours of play.

The 25-year-old Garcia, a program chess director at Ateneo de Manila University chess team, won 29 games, drew 4, and lost eight games for his aggregate score and the P10,000 top purse.

"Masayang-masaya po ako sa pagkapanalo ko sa tournament na ito, Grandmaster (GM) and Attorney (Atty) Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. and Mayor Maria Carla Lopez Pichay online chess tournament. Maraming salamat din sa GM Rosendo Balinas family na nag sponsor ng year-ender event," said Garcia, a member of the Philippine Team who played in 2018 Batumi, Georgia World Chess Olympiad.

Non-Master Ellan Asuela of Bacolod City took the second spot with 94 points on 39 games and a win rate of 69 percent on 26 wins for a performance rating of 2773 and the P7,000 second place price. In third place is International Master Daniel Quizon of Dasmarinas City who had 87 points to pocket P5,000.
Fide Master Narquingden Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal finished fourth with 80, followed by fifth placer non-master Jan Clifford Labog of Nueva Vizcaya and sixth player another untitled player Chin Lim of Quezon City, both tallied 78 points.

Fide Master Roel Abelgas of Dasmarinas City, Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. of Arizona, USA, International Master elect Eric Labog Jr. of Nueva Vizcaya and Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus of Davao City finished seventh to 10th placers with 77, 75, 75 and 73 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. of Quezon City settled for 19th place, GM Darwin Laylo of Dasmarinas City who end up 62nd place while defending champion GM Mark Paragua of New York, USA landed at 183th place.

Last Saturday, December 26, 2020, Gio Ventura, a grade 8 pupil of Dasmariñas Integrated High School, playing under the guidance of coach FM Roel Abelgas and Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. won the kiddies category 13 under with 81 points.

The 13 year old Ventura pocketed the top prize of P5,000. Woman Candidate Master Franiel Angela Magpily of Makati City placed second with 75 points for P2,500 richer.

John David Makalintal of Caloocan City, Michael Jan Stephen Inigo of Dumaguete City, Joemel Narzabal of Dipolog City and Cedric Kahlel Abris of Lucena City finished third, fourth, fifth and and 6th with 56, 51, 50, and 50 points, respectively.
The 7th-10th spots in this P25,000 total prize tournament were taken by Jhay Mar Cruz of San Marcelino, Arena Grandmaster Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Al-Basher "Basty" Buto of Cainta, Rizal and James Catayas of Davao City.-Marlon Bernardino-
