Unbeaten Venezuelan WBA Light Flyweight World Champion Carlos “CCC” Cañizales (22-0-1, 17 KO’s), will not defend belt today in Colombia because of weight excess problems for his Mexican challenger former champ Jesús “Negrito” Silvestre (37-7, 26 KO’s), for which their clash had to be cancelled.
“Today I will not fight because my rival (Silvestre) did not give the weight. I hope soon I will return to the ring,” said Cañizales.
He was wanting to make the 3rd defence of the black and golden crown that he claimed by defeating Reiya Konshi (17-2, 7 KO’s) nearly 3 years ago in Kobe, Japan.
The heavy-handed 27-year-old Venezuelan – whose last battle was a win by points over Japanese former titlist Sho Kimura (19-3-2, 12 KO’s) in May of 2019 in China – has been interested in going back to Japan to unify WBA 108-pound belts against undefeated Japanese WBA “Super Champion” Hiroto Kyoguchi (14-0, 9 KO’s).
Will that fight ever happen in 2021? Boxing fans hope so as the war would pit 2 of the top-5 toughest men in the division.
The other 3 most dangerous fighters in the weight-class are unbeaten Japanese WBC king Kenshiro Teraji (17-0, 10 KO’s), Nicaraguan IBF Champion Félix “El Gemelo” Alvarado 35-2, 30 KO’s), and Mexican WBO world Champion “La Pulga” Elwin Soto (18-1, 12 KO’s).
