
High hopes for Pinoy chessers

Manila, Philippines---THE Philippines, bannered by current youngest Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City, Davao, Del Norte, Candidate Master (CM) Al-Basher "Basty" Buto of Cainta, Rizal Province and Oshrie Jhames "OJ" Reyes of Dila-Dila, Santa Rita, Pampanga, will be one of the countries to watch in the coming FIDE Online World Cadets & Youth Rapid Chess Tournaments 2020.
“I practice and do chess puzzles," said the 11-year-old Arca, a grade VI pupil of Panabo Central Elementary School. “This upcoming tournament is the strongest tournament I have ever joined," added Arca, who is best remembered for his first-place finish in the Under-17 division of the 11th AFPI Chess Arena last May 18.
“I hope to do well in this prestigious FIDE (World) Chess event." said the 10-year-old Buto, a grade five pupil of Faith Christian School in Cainta, Rizal Province, playing under the banner of American chess coach Dave Fenton.
“I will pour all that I know in the chess mind boggling games,” said the 9-year-old Reyes, a grade 4 pupil of EZEE School in Guagua, Pampanga.
Arca will be seeing in action in the Open Under 12 category while Buto and Reyes will be pitted in the Open Under 10 division.
Fide Master (FM) Aldiyar Ansat and Edgar Mamedov of Kazakhstan is the top seed in the Open Under 12 and Open Under 10 division, respectively.
The qualifying round gets underway on December 11, 12 and 13, 2020 at Tornelo platform.
