Bacolod's Asuela rules NLEX Sports Battle of the Minds online chess tourney

MANILA, Philippines — Bacolod City, Negros Occidental top player Ellan Asuela bested a strong field of contenders to rule the NLEX Sports Battle of the Minds online chess tournament played last Sunday afternoon on lichess.org.

Asuela completed the mind-draining 17-round Swiss competition with the highest output of 13.5 points to clinch the coveted title. Asuela received the top prize P3,000 for his efforts.
Quezon City's top pawnpusher Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and Valenzuela City's Rowell Roque both tallied 13.0 points but Antonio took the solo second place honors by virtue of a higher tiebreaker.

Fourth to sixth spots were occupied by Bulacan's Karl Victor Ochoa, Pampanga's Dale Bernardo, and Dasmarinas' IM Daniel Quizon with 12.5 points each.

Rounding up the top 10 were Sherwin Tiu (seventh), John Ranel Morazo (eight), Kevin Arquero (ninth) and FM Roel Abelgas (tenth).

In another chess news, Asuela tallied 82 points, to be the top notcher of Team Quezon/Toronto last Saturday afternoon.
Sponsored by Jelvis Calvelo, the Team Quezon/Toronto toppled Zulfikar Sali's Zamboanga Oilers, 631-533 Arena Points, enough to went home the 350 dollar cash prize.-Marlon Bernardino-
