
GM Mark Paragua rules Babin Smith International Online Chess Tournament

Manila, Philippines---Grandmaster Mark Paragua of the Philippines ruled via tiebreak the Babin Smith Anniversary Cup International Online Chess Tournament on Monday, September 21, 2020 at lichess.org.
Paragua was tied for first-second places with International Master Egor Bogdanov of Ukraine at 12.5 points apiece in the 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment time blitz control format.
With the highest tiebreak points, Paragua took the title plus P2,000 top purse while Bogdanov finished second for P1,000 for his effort in the 442 player's field.
In third place was Grandmaster Maksat Atabayev of Turkmenistan with 11.5 points for P500 in this 1-day online chess tournament being held coincide the 24th wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. Alvin Guevarra, aka “Babin Smith” and Ms. Riza Celajes-Guevarra, backed by Ms. Rhoda Celajes-Frei and Ms. Kristine Abegail Guevarra-Gamet of Anchorage Alaska, Mr. Jun Sahagun, Mr. Robin Victoria and Mr. Joseph Young of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Mr & Mrs. Jerry and Lei Garlit.
Alvin or Babin is also a chess player himself, he was a part of the famous FEU Tamaraws chess team in the UAAP under the legendary coach, GM Jayson Gonzales, while Ms. Riza, was a Guidance Counselor at the New Era University. The couple is now residing in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.This tournament is being organized by NM Homer Cunanan and Mr. Leo Penaredondo.-Marlon Bernardino-
