THE PBA has started distributing PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) to their intended recipients around Luzon in the play-for-pay’s efforts in further helping front liners in the current battle against the spread of the Covid-19 in the country.
The PPEs -- face masks, gloves, and other protective gears -- had already been distributed on Tuesday in hospitals in the cities of Pasig, Antipolo, and Biñan in Laguna.
Pasig City Vice Mayor Iyo Bernardo went to the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City to personally receive the donations intended for the Pasig Children’s Hospital, Pasig City General Hospital, and the Rizal Medical Center.
The league, according to PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, has also been coordinating with Antipolo City Mayor Andrea Yñares and predecessor Casimero ‘Jun’ Ynares III, and Biñan City Congresswoman Len Alonte and Vice Mayor Angelo Alonte so they can also receive their shares of the donations.
All three cities regularly hold PBA games through the Philsports Arena in Pasig, Yñares Center in Antipolo, and the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan all these years.
Donations of the protective supplies were made possible after the PBA Board of Governors, led by its chairman Ricky Vargas of Talk 'N Text with the support of Gillette Philippines.
Marcial earlier announced the decision to donate P1 million worth of PPEs aimed at supporting the government’s fight against the pandemic.
The move was made during the Board’s online meeting held last April 7, with all 12 member teams -- Rain or Shine, Alaska, Barangay Ginebra, NorthPort, TnT Katropa, Meralco, NLEX, San Miguel, Columbian Dyip, Blackwater, Phoenix, and Magnolia – unanimously committing themselves to the fight.
"Marami pa tayong naka-schedule na tulong for the purpose sa mga darating pang araw," Marcial told The Manila Times in a telephone conversation Wednesday afternoon.
“This will include the City of Pasay under Mayor Imelda Calixto and the municipality of Talisay in Batangas,” Marcial said.
The PBA commissioner added that a frontliner from Batangas he identified as Michelle Padilla, personally requested him protective gears for the medical workers at the Talisay Health Center and Birthing Home.
In the list, too, of beneficiaries are the Veterans’ Hospital, National Center for Mental Health and the Batangas Provincial Hospital, among others.
The board had, likewise, ensure that the needs of PBA game-day personnel are taken cared of by appropriating considerable amount to somehow help them augment their financial requirements following the placing of the entire Luzon under lockdown more than a month ago.
“Alam naman nating ang buong sports community hindi lamang sa ating bansa kundi sa buong daigdig ay apektado ng Covid 19, kung kaya’t mas madali nating masusugpo ang paglaganap nito mas mabuti,” Marcial reasoned out.
“At makakamit lamang natin ito by doing our share in the fight against the pandemic,” he stressed.
