National Master Elwin Retanal rules Riyadh Chess Championship

Philippine National Master Elwin Herbias Retanal dominated the 4th Riyadh Resident Chess Tournament at the Mena Hotel, Olaya Street, Riyadh City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia last Friday, February 21, 2020.

The Cebuano native Retanal, 1997 national junior champion, scored 7 points on 7 wins to rule the 7-round tournament and successfully defended his title.

Candidate Master Khairat Ahmed of Egypt settled for second with 6 points.

Abdel Fatah Mohamed Hamed of Egypt and Mohammad Salahat of Jordan were tied at 3rd to 4th places with 5.5 points each while Nelson Lagutin and Eduardo Valenzuela of the Philippines led the group of five pointers that includes Gamal Abd Alhakm of Egypt, Ababneh Ghayth of Jordan, Mortada Haytham, Mahmoud Houssam and Elizamar Ahmad of Egypt.

Other Filipino entries are 13th placer Richard Matibag (4 points) and 18th placer Emmerson Vicencio (4 points).

With the victory, Retanal's performance boosted the nation's morale, said Arena Grandmaster Robert Ramos Suelo Jr., 1996 national junior champion.

“Once again our flag has been raised in this foreign land after knowing that our Filipino kababayan Philippine National Master Elwin Herbias Retanal dominated the 4th Riyadh Resident Chess Tournament,” he said.-Marlon Bernardino-
