Jasper Faeldonia, top player of Arellano University from Odiongan, Romblon under the tutelage of National Master Rudy Ibanez, defeated 2nd seed Arje Villarin using Slav Defense in the final round to top the 2020 National Age Group Chess Championship Visayas Leg Under 16 Open Division held at SM Seaside, Cebu City last January from 3 to 5, 2020.

Holding the black pieces, Jasper took advantage of having two pawns up and in control of the 7th rank with his rook in the end game and forced the Cebuano top player to resign.

Undefeated in 7 outings, he also defeated Sean Misal, Lyneil Henri Jumao-as, Euniel Grant Capilitan to score a total of 4 wins and 3 draws against Gabriel John Umayan of FEU, John Lance Valencia of Dasmarinas, Cavite & John Lester Belano of Cebu.

The top 3 winners for each category will qualify for the 2020 NAGCC grand finals which will be the final qualifying event for the selection of National Team members that will represent the Philippines in the upcoming 2020 ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship in Vietnam.

Jasper would like to thank his sponsors Arellano University, coach NM Rudy Ibanez, his relatives in Odiongan Romblon, his father coach Engr. Ernie Faeldonia & his sparring partner Jerick Faeldonia. -Marlon Bernardino-
