Paulo Bersamina clinched his third and final GM norm after finishing solo first place in the 4th Asean Chess Championships (Men) held recently in Bac Giang City, Vietnam.
Bersamina scored seven points out of the possible nine to win the tournament.
Bersamina thus obtained his third GM result but he needed to raise his Fide rating from 2455 to 2500 to complete his GM title status according to Fide arbiter Red Dumuk, who is also the deputy secretary-general and executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
Bersamina outplayed Dao Minh Nhat, GM Nguyen Duc Hoa, FM Le Minh Hoang, CM Nguyen Quoc Hy and CM Nguyen Hoang Nam of Vietnam in succession while drawing with Pham Xuan Dat (round 1), IM Le Tuan Minh (round 6), FM Dang Hoang Son (round 7) and IM Duong The Anh (round 9) of Vietnam.
The former National University standout obtained his first GM norm in 2014 in Macao (Asean + Age Group) then gained his second GM result in 2018 in Davao City (Asean + Age group).
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. lauded Bersamina's win.
"The success of Paulo Bersamina in the international competition would somehow inspire Filipino youths to venture into this sport," Pichay said.-Marlon Bernardino-
