
Mariano, Quizon bag Thailand blitz chess tilt

Fide Master Nelson "Elo" Mariano III of Bacoor City, Cavite put on a strong start and a stronger finish to run away with the Open blitz B crown while International Master Daniel Quizon of Dasmarinas City, Cavite pocketed the Open blitz A plum in the Thailand Pattaya Open 2019 chess championship held at the Bay Beach Resort in Pattaya, Thailand last Saturday (October 26, 2019).
Fondly called "Elo" in the chess circle, younger brother of Grandmaster Nelson "Jet" Mariano II and Woman International Master Cristine Rose Mariano-W?gman swept his last five matches to finish with 10 points, posting a big victory over compatriot Mohamad Sacar of Cotabato, who wound up with 6.5 points.
Elo is the head chess coach of Jose Rizal University in Mandaluyong City under the watchful eye of JRU athletic director Paul Supan.
Far Eastern University mainstay Darry Bernardo of Angeles, Pampanga and Volodymyr Yaniuk of Ukraine tied for second with 8.0 points while Big Rook Chess Academy - Bangkok chess instructor Fide Master Jony Habla, the pride of Novelty Chess Club ended up with 7.5 points, the same output of Grandmaster Roy Saptarshi of India and Arena Grandmaster Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo City, Davao Del Norte.
Meanwhile, IM Quizon, playing under the banner of sportsman and Dasmarinas City, Cavite rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga notched 9.0 points to went home the Open blitz A crown.
University of the East bet Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, Calamba City, Laguna ace Vladimir Gonzales and Dasmarinas City, Cavite pride International Master elect Roel Abelgas scored identical 8.0 points each, half point ahead with Jirapak Chess Academy chess instructor National Master Ric Portugalera of General Santos City and Fide Master Sander Severino of Silay City, Negros Occidental who totes 7.5 points apiece.
Earlier, country's youngest Woman Fide Master Antonella Berthe Racasa of Mandaluyong City collected girls' U-12 crown while Wayne Ruiz of Santa Rosa City, Laguna won the over-all championships' trophy in the Under 12 category.
Racasa's campaign in Thailand International Chess Championship was supported by D. Edgard A.
