SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga---Mark Anthony Yabut bested Kevin Mirano in a duel of fancied bets in the seventh round to capture the executive crown while John Frederick Sunga ruled via tiebreak the youth division in the 2019 GM (Atty.) Rosendo C. Balinas, Jr. (PECA) National Executives Grand Prix Chess Championships dubbed as 15th leg M.A. Yabut Realty Cup held at the Waltermart Mall , San Agustin, San Fernando City, Pampanga last Sunday here.
Yabut, a former Far Eastern University chess team stalwart show his mastery in the black pieces beating Mirano in the final round to emerge solo champion in the executive category with 6.0 points.
Yabut scored victories over Billy Limpengco in the first round, Dr. Jenny Mayor in the second round, Victor Anas in the third round, National Master Raymond Salcedo in the sixth and penultimate round before downing Mirano in the final canto.
He split the point with International Master Angelo Young in the fourth round and Florel Cruz in the fifth round.
In the youth category, John Frederick Sunga tied for first-second places with Lexie Grace Hernandez 5.0 points in six outings.
With the highest tiebreak points, Sunga took the title while Hernandez finished second.
Meanwhile, the registration of D'Travel Queen's Travel and Tours 16th leg GM (Atty.) Rosendo C. Balinas, Jr. (PECA) National Executives Grand Prix Chess Championships is now on full swing. This is Metro Manila last leg according to tournament director Dandel Fernandez of Maynilad. Alphaland Place Makati in Malugay Street will host the 1 day chess affair on Saturday, October 12.
