DETROIT -- Anthony Davis inked with the Los Angeles Lakers while good friends Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving left their respective teams to join the Brooklyn Nets.
While the big market teams lured the A-list names during the free agency off-season, the Detroit Pistons quietly acquired a star in his own right -- Derrick Rose.
Rose, who played 51 games for the Timberwolves last season, was inked to a two-year $15 million deal. It's a huge bump from the $2.5 million one-year contract that the 30-year old point guard toiled with while in Minnesota.
As a Timberwolf, Rose appeared in 51 games and averaged 18 points an outing. He shot 48 percent from the field and a very impressive 37 percent from 3-point range.
But his best years were clearly spent in Chicago, his hometown where he starred at Simeon before playing one year of college ball at the University of Memphis.
The 2011 NBA MVP,Rose was a huge star with the Chicago Bulls, averaging 25 points and 7.7 assists per while leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals that year. He played under coach Tom Thibodeau and ran with Joakim Noah and Jimmy Butler.
But Rose, the No.1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, tore his ACL in the first game of the 2012 playoffs. He was never the same again and missed nearly two full seasons to recover from the ACL tear and other injuries that followed.
After short stints with the Knicks and Cavs, he had a resurgence in Minnesota, which paved the way to Detroit signing him.
The Pistons made the playoffs last season, but barely, with a 41-41 slate before exiting in the opening round against the Milwaukee Bucks.
If healthy, Rose can help with scoring off the bench while manning point guard duties. That's a big "if" given his history of injuries. But the Pistons are willing to make the bet, a $15 million bet.
