Bersamina defeats Ramayrat in Balinas chess tilt

International Master Paulo Bersamina continued his winning ways in the 2019 GM Rosendo Balinas Memorial Cup chess championship as he defeated International Master Chris Ramayrat at the Activity Hall, Second Floor Alphaland Makati Place in Malugay Street, Makati City on Monday.

Playing white, Bersamina beat Ramayrat after 24 moves of Sicilian defense.

Bersamina still holds the solo lead with 9.5 points after Round 12.

13-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. edged International Master Daniel Quizon after 45 moves of English Opening while Grandmaster Darwin Laylo toppled Kevin Mirano after 35 moves of Slav defense. Antonio, the country's bet in this year's 2019 Bucharest, Romania World Seniors Chess Championship, notched 9.0 points, the same output of Laylo in this Single Round-Robin Standard time control tournament jointly organized by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) director Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe and Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) president Dr. Jenny Mayor and backed up by engineer Antonio "Tony" Carreon Balinas, US based Joe Balinas and Singapore based Nur Rose Balinas in close cooperation with Alphaland Corporation.

Sherwin Tiu halved the point with Michael Concio Jr. after 30 mnoves of Sicilian defense to score 7.5 points for solo fourth position.

Rolly Parondo Jr., meantime upset National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan after 45 moves of KIng's Indian defense to score 6.5 points and climb at 5th to 7th spots that includes Quizon and International Master Angelo Young, winner over National Master Julius Sinangote after 40 moves of Old Indian defense.

International Master Ricardo de Guzman nipped Grandmaster John Paul Gomez after 18 moves of Torre Attack to raise his total to 5.0 points. Also with 5.0 points is Ramayrat. Gomez remains at 6.0 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
