
Bersamina remains on top in Balinas chess tilt

International Master Paulo Bersamina outclassed International Master Daniel Quizon after 28 moves of Sicilian defense in the tenth round to remain on top in the 2019 GM Rosendo Balinas Memorial Cup chess championship at the Activity Hall, Second Floor Alphaland Makati Place in Malugay Street, Makati City on Saturday.
With the win, Bersamina collected 8.0 points on account of seven wins and two draws in this Single Round-Robin standard time control format backed up by engineer Antonio "Tony" Carreon Balinas, US based Joe Balinas and Singapore based Nur Rose Balinas and hosted by Alphaland Corporation in close cooperation with Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) president Dr. Jenny Mayor and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) director Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe.
Bersamina grabs the solo leadership board on Friday after beating Kevin Mirano in Round 9.
Grandmaster Darwin Laylo and 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey"Antonio Jr. toppled their respective rivals to share 2nd to 3rd placers with 7.5 points apiece.
Laylo stopped the winning run of Sherwin Tiu after 37 moves of Nimzo Indian defense while Antonio, country's this year representative in the 2019 Bucharest, Romania World Seniors Chess Championship, trounced International Master Ricardo De Guzman after 41 moves of Sicilian defense.
Tiu, a habitue of Tarrash Knight Guadalupe Chess Club was stuck at 6.0 points, the same output of Grandmaster John Paul Gomez who forced a three moves repetition draw against International Master Angelo Young after 24 moves of Reti Opening.
In other results, Rolly Parondo Jr. bested Kevin Mirano after 39 moves of Kings Indian defense while National Master Julius Sinangote nipped National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan after 49 moves of Reti Opening and Michael Concio Jr. crushed Alfredo Rapanot after 60 moves of French defense.-Marlon Bernardino-
