International Master Paulo Bersamina, one of the country's top bets in this year's Manila Southeast Asian Games ruled via tiebreak the qualifying round of the Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas Jr. Memorial Chess Tournament held at the Activity Hall, Second Floor Alphaland Makati Place in Malugay Street, Makati City on Saturday.
Bersamina, tied for first-second places with International Master Daniel Quizon at 6.0 points apiece in the one day event hosted by engineer Antonio "Tony" Carreon Balinas, organized by Dr. Jenny Mayor, lawyer Cliburn Anthony Orbe and Dr. Alfred Paez in coordination with Alphaland Mall.
With the highest tiebreak points, Bersamina took the Open title while Quizon finished second.
Rounding up the top 11 winners were Inertantional Master Angelo Young (3rd); Fide Master Nelson Villanueva (4th); National Master Nick Nisperos (5th); International Master Ricardo de Guzman (6th); International Master Chris Ramayrat (7th); National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan (8th) National Master Julius Sinangote (9th); Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. (10th) and International Master Barlo Nadera (11th).
In the seventh and final round matches saw, Bersamina defeated Nadera after 56 moves of Nimzo-Indian defense while Quizon beat De Guzman after 107 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening.
Meanwhile, Sherwin Tiu trounced Alfred Rapanot after 89 moves of Nimzo-Indian defense to topped the non-master division. He collected 6.5 points in seven outings.
Kevin Mirano and Christian Arroyo shared the second to third place by scoring 6.0 points each while 5.5 points is Rolly Parondo.
International Arbiter Gene J. Poliarco is the chief arbiter in the said chessfest.-Marlon Bernardino-
