De Guzman spearheads Balinas Open tournament entries

International Master Ricardo "Ricky" De Guzman will be the man to beat in the qualifying round of the Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas Jr. Memorial Chess Tournament on August 17 at the Activity Hall, Second Floor Alphaland Makati Place in Malugay Street, Makati City.
The 1982 Asian Junior Champion De Guzman looms as the player owing to his big wins as the top Filipino performer in the standard competition of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships-2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup at the Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati last December.
The pride of Antipolo City De Guzman also won the Open Kitchen Chess Tournament held at the Open Kitchen P. Tuazon Boulevard, Barangay Kaunlaran in Cubao, Quezon City last June 18 and the 7th leg of National Executive Chess Championships dubbed as Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas Jr. chess cup held at the Activity Hall, Alphaland Makati Place, Ayala Avenue in Makati City last June 22.
The tournament will be played in a 7-round Swiss System format, 20 minutes plus five seconds delay mode with the Titled/Master winner taking home P7,000, second place P5,000, third place P3,000, fourth place P2,000 and fifth place P1,000 in the event hosted by engineer Antonio "Tony" Balinas in cooperation with Dr. Jenny Mayor, Dr. Alfred Paez and lawyer Cliburn Anthony Orbe of the Philippine Executive Chess Association and Alphaland Mall.
The untitled or non-master champion meanwhile, will bag P5,000 while the runner-up will settle for P4,000 and the next three players will go home with P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000.
Special prizes the top Senior, Executive Lady, College, High School and Elementary will also likewise to receive P1,000 each.
Other vying in the one-day event are International Master Barlo Nadera, Woman International Master Marie Antoniette San Diego, Woman Fide Masters Antonella Berthe Racasa, Allaney Jia Doroy and Samantha Glo Revita, National Masters Nick Nisperos, Carlo Magno Rosaupan, United States Masters Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr. and Arjoe Loanzon.
Also set to fight for their place are Mark Anthony Yabut, Genghis Katipunan Imperial, Ryan, Ryza Mae and Vincent Ryu Dimayuga, Jairus Roshan Thaddeus Casumbal, Kena Areld and Miguel Arond Galleguez, Dioniver Medrano and Chris Cuntapay.
