PH CHESS GENIUS AL-BASHER BUTO WINS COUNTRY'S THIRD GOLD IN 4TH EASTERN ASIA YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

PH chess genius Al-Basher "Basty" Buto captured the Boys 10 and under division title in the standard play via tiebreak at the conclusion of the 4th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship at the Asia Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand on Friday.

Buto, a grade 4 pupil of Faith Christian School in Cainta, Rizal tied for first-second places with Arjuna Satria Pamungkas of Indonesia at 8 points apiece in the 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment minutes time control event organized by Thailand Chess Association.

With the highest tiebreak points, Buto, who hails from Marawi City, took the title while Pamungkas finished second.

"Congrats Al-Basher Buto you made the whole country proud and happy with your achievement," said Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe of Alphaland Corporation who is also director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

This is Philippines? third gold so far in the individual competition of the standard play after Ruelle "Tawing" Canino (G-12) of Cagayan de Oro City and International Master Daniel Quizon (U-16) of Dasmarinas City, Cavite, who clinched crown Thursday.

Meanwhile, Quizon teaming up with Michael Concio Jr. of Dasmarinas City, Cavite and Fide Master Alekhine Nouri of FEU-Fern Quezon City got the gold in team play in the Under-16 division.-Marlon Bernardino-
