IM Ricky de Guzman rules chessfest

International Master Ricky De Guzman reigned supreme in the Open Kitchen Chess Tournament held at the Open Kitchen P. Tuazon Boulevard, Barangay Kaunlaran in Cubao, Quezon City late Tuesday.

The former Asian Junior champion De Guzman collected 4 points to win the 5 Round Tournament hosted by New York Chess League top honcho/boss Nonoy Rafael in close cooperation with China Aurelio, John Gomez and Popo Martinez of Open Kitchen and Jeff Dimalanta.

It shall be recalled that De Guzman emerged as the country?s best performer in the Open section of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships last December at the Tiara Hotel in Makati City.

8-times Illinois USA chess champion International Master Angelo Young led the group of 3.5 pointers that includes International Master Daniel Quizon, World's First Fide Master Adrian Ros Pacis, National Master Romeo Alcodia and 7-times Philippine Executive Grand Prix Champion Dr. Jenny Mayor.

Other players who participated in the one-day tournament which aims to promote camaraderie among the chess players are National Master Efren Bagamasbad, Genghis Katipunan Imperial, Edgar "Bote" Bautista, National Master Marlon Bernardino, Ron Demain, Noel Jay "Super B" Estacio, Zac Encarnacion, Jun Isaac, Jovito Quizon and Glenn Lemen.

No less than Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr.and Judge Hillario Laqui led the closing rites.-Marlon Bernardino-
