Cena, Lu share Bacolod chess tourney

BACOLOD CITY---Neil Vincent Cena of Bacolod City and Johnmari Josef Lu of Zamboanga City kept the lead in the on-going 2019 National Youth and Schools Chess Championships-Visayas leg at the 4th floor Metro Lobby, Ayala Malls Capitol Central, Bacolod City over the weekend.

Cena defeated Karl Patrick Bardinas of San Enrique, Negros Occidental after 54 moves of Queens Pawn Game while Lu toppled Tyrone Dale Yao of Bacolod City after 42 moves of Slav defense.

Both players now have 3.0 points on three wins each in the Under 15 mixed (boys and girls) division of this two-day National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned tournament is being organized by Ernie and Stella Mar Abanco of Abanco Realty.

Cena, earlier beat Eon Luyeth Ciocon and Karl Albert Alvaran of Bacolod City while Lu subdued Mizpah Fundador of Dumaguete City and Erich Singson of La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

Checy Aliena Telesforo of Iloilo, meantime split the point with Lawrence Anthony Paradela of Cebu after 60 moves of English Opening to grab the solo third spot with 2.5 points.

Tournament Director International Arbiter/National Master Wilfredo Neri said yesterday that the staging of the National Executive Chess Championships-Bacolod City Qualifying leg gets underway on Sunday here at the Ayala Mall Capitol Central, Gatuslao Street, Bacolod City,Negros Occidental.

Among the early entries are seven-times Philippine Executive grand prix champion, Dr. Jenny Mayor, Dr. Alfred Paez, Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe, MVP Olympics PLDT Team Manager Martin "Binky" Gaticales, banker Emmanuel Asi, Eric Abanco, Adelaide Joie Lim, Theseus Benitez, Engr. Annie Montales, Engr.Alex Aquio, Engr. John Manual, Atty. Alex Abastillas and Atty. Victor Tanoso.-Marlon Bernardino-
