Filipino RL Guerra on a roll, wins 2nd New Zealand chess title

FILIPINO Romie Lord "RL" Guerra continued his winning streak in New Zealand as he emerged the overall champion in the Bay of Plenty Rapid Chess Championships 2019 last Saturday, February 23, 2019 held at the Masonic Centre Convention Center in Tauranga, New Zealand.

The 30-year-old Guerra who hails from Marikina Heights, Marikina City, collected 5.0 points to win the tournament.
Fide Master Daniel Hanwen Gong and Evan Timothy Capel of New Zealand settled for second and third places with 4.5 points apiece.

Alphaeus Wei Er of New Zealand, meantime led the group of 4.0 pointers that includes compatriots Russel John Dive, Irmak Sipahioglu and Ralp Hart.

Another Filipino entry Noel Pinic, a native of Benguet won the top Under 2100 category with 3.5 points.

Guerra, a former top player of Adamson University under the tutelage of coach Christopher Rodriguez during his College Days now has two (2) New Zealand chess titles which he won in a span of two months, from January to February.

He won the New Zealand Major Open Chess Championship dubbed as 126th New Zealand Chess Congress that was held January 14 to 24, 2019 at the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Center in Auckland, New Zealand. He tallied 7.5 points on seven wins, one draw and a loss to win the nine-round tournament.
Guerra who is also member of the Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA), also won the top 1900 below in the New Zealand Rapid (6.5 pts./9) and placed second in the New Zealand Lightning (7.5 pts./9).
