IM Emmanuel Senador leads Team Philippines in ruling Penang, Malaysia chess tourney

INTERNATIONAL MASTER (IM) Emmanuel "Manny" Senador proved unstoppable at the top board to lead Team Philippines to the Wah Seong Penang Chess League 2018 Championship that was held recently at the Red Rock Hotel in Penang, Malaysia.

Senador defeated Roy Marpaung to lead Team Philippines to a 3.5-0.5 win over Miracle Team Indonesia in the eight and final round.

The Team Philippines finished with seven wins, one loss, 14 Match Points and 25.5 board points in eight outings applying the 15 minutes plus 10 seconds increment time control format.

Apart from Senador, Team Philippines was made up of Arena Grandmaster (AGM) and Fide Master (FM) elect Robert Suelo Jr, Ian Cris Udani and Fide Master (FM) Nelson Villanueva.

With the victory, Team Philippines' performance boosted the nation?s morale, said former Polytechnic University of the Philippines top chess player Roberto Racasa, the man considered as the Father of Philippine Memory Sports.

Other interesting match-ups in the final round are Suelo halving the point with International Master (IM) Anjas Novita in Board 2 while Udani blasted International Master (IM) Dede Lioe in Board 3 and Villanueva toppled Ricky Rismanto in Board 4.

Team Philippines scored victories over Kelab Catur Hijau Kuning -Girls (4-0) in the first round; Chessmates State,Lady, U18G (4-0) in the second round; OXA 1Penang (3.5-0.5) in the third round; China 1 (3.5-0.5) in the fourth round; Chinese Children U12-Boys (4-0) in the fifth round;Caste & Friends (3-1) in the seventh and penultimate round before crushing Miracle Team Indonesia in the final canto. Their only setback at the hands of East Java (1-3) in the sixth round.

Suelo settled a truce with Andika Pitra while Villanueva split the point with Anam Khairul. Senador, meantime yielded to Kurniawan Muhamad Agus while Udani succumbed to Hakim Nuh.-Marlon Bernardino-
