Haridas Pascua scores third draw in 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships

MAKATI CITY, Philippines ? Filipino International Master Haridas Pascua notched his third straight draw against Grandmaster Abhimanyu Puranik (elo 2544) of India in the third round of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships (2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup) Wednesday at the Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati.

GM Puranik tried to go for a win, but eventually decided to split the point with Pascua.

The Mangatarem, Pangasinan native Pascua who is currently based in Baguio City, earlier drew his match against Grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (elo 2701) of India in the first round Monday and International Master Novendra Priasmoro (elo 2483) of Indonesia in the second round Tuesday.

"Buti nakuha sa pilit na makatabla pa ako sa laro," said Pascua who needed to raise his elo rating of 2442 to 2500 to complete his GM title status.

Pascua will face International Master Nodirbek Yakubboev (elo 2556) of Uzbekistan in the fourth round on Friday.

The Filipino GM elect Pascua now has 1.5 points, a good for a share of 24th to 42nd place that includes compatriots GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., IMs Jan Emmanuel Garcia and Ricardo de Guzman, FM Mari Joseph Turqueza and Michael Concio Jr.

However, IM Paulo Bersamina (elo 2244) suffered his second straight loss this time to GM Amin Tabatabael (elo 2587) of Iran in Round 3.

The Pasay City pride Bersamina, who is looking for his third and final GM norm, opened the tournament with a big bang after demolishing GM Le Quang Liem (elo 2714) of Vietnam in Round 1 but yielded to GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov (elo 2546) of Uzbekistan in Round 2. Bersamina will meet countryman and newly-installed IM Daniel Quizon (elo 2314) in Round 4.

After a sorry loss to GM Alireza Firouzja (elo 2607) of Iran in Round 1, IM Roderick Nava (elo 2392) bounced back in contention with back to back wins against Randolph Schain (elo 2229) of Cambodia in Round 2 and IM Novendra Priasmoro (elo 2483) of Indonesia in Round 3.

The Carmona, Cavite ace Nava now has 2 points, and climb at 13th to 23rd place.

21st seed GM M. R. Lalith Babu (elo 2529) of India toppled 16th seed IM Nodirbek Yakubboev (elo 2556) of Uzbekistan to share on top along with 11 others with 2.5 points in three outings.

In the womens' side, Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia G. Doroy (elo 1972) halving the point with Woman Fide Master Li Yunshan (elo 2196) of China to scored 1.5 points and was tied at 16th to 22nd place after three games of play.

Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna (elo 2228) split the point with compatriot Woman Fide Master Cherry Ann Mejia (elo 1980) to raise her total 1 point.

The top five in the men?s will advance to the World Cup while the champion in the women qualifies in the Women?s World Championship tournament.

New Zealand based Jun Isaac (elo 1894), one of the oldest among the participants at the age of 75 but still "moving on" for the love of the game, meantime drew with National Master Eduardo Estrella (elo 2039). Jun, the older brother of ex PBA player Leo Isaac now has 1.5 points in the challenger section.-Marlon Bernardino-
