FM Villanueva wins Penang, Malaysia Blitz chess; AGM Suelo placed fourth overall

FIDE Master (FM) Nelson Villanueva reinforced his position as one of the Philippines? top blitz chess players when he ruled the Penang Heritage City International Chess Blitz 2018 at the Red Rock Hotel in Penang, Malaysia Thursday night.

FM Villanueva defeated Singaporean Ethan Xuan Rui Poh in the final round to score 12 points in 13 outings to bag the coveted title in the 124 players field, five minutes blitz time control format.

Fide Master (FM) Yinn Long Wong of Malaysia and International Master (IM) Dede Lioe of Indonesia finished tied for 2nd to 3rd spots with 10.5 points.

Fourth place overall Arena Grandmaster (AGM) and Fide Master (FM) elect Roberto Suelo Jr. of the Philippines led a huge group of 9 pointers that includes International Master (IM) Novita Anjas of Indonesia, Grandmaster (GM) Alexei Barsov of Uzbekistan, International Master (IM) Ronny Gunawan of Indonesia, Tze Han Ng of Malaysia, Jun Hao Tan of Singapore, Chao Sun of China, Umar Isomov of Uzbekistan and Poh.-Marlon Bernardino-
