PH woodpushers win 7 medals, awards in Kaoshiung, Taiwan chess meet

STUDENTS from Cavite, Philippines won a total of seven medals on account of five golds, one silver and one bronze medal in the recently concluded Kaoshiung Speaker Cup Chess Competition last November 8 to 13, 2018 at the Kaohsiung Sports Complex Stadium in Kaoshiung, Taiwan.

Gabrielle Anne Perez, 11-years-old, a grade 6 pupil of Haven of Virtue Excellence Academy Inc., (E4-1 category), Jan Dhave Marquez, 11, grade 6 pupil of Haven of Virtue Excellence Academy Inc., (E5-3 category), Gwyneth Melody Perez, 14, grade 9 pupil of Samuel Christian College (D4-1 category), Mark Vincent Nuella, 14, grade 9 of Haven of Virtue Excellence Academy Inc., (D4-5 category), Christian Jake Sace, 15, grade 10 pupil of Tanza Comprehensive National High School (Open category) bagged gold medals, while Jerome Gunao, 15, grade 10 pupil Haven of Virtue Excellence Academy Inc., (Open category) receive a silver medal and Jannaiah Chloei Tiaga, 7, grade 2 pupil of Haven of Virtue Excellence Academy Inc., (F2-1 category) pocketed the bronze medal in the four nations (USA, China, Philippines and host Taiwan) tournament.

Last May 27, 2018 in Mayor's Cup Chess Competition in Taichung, Taiwan, Gabrielle Anne and Gwyneth Melody Perez won the gold in the Under 12 and Under 14 division, respectively while Jan Dhave Marquez and Mark Vincent Nuella won the bronze in the Under 12 and Under 14 category and Jannaiah Chloei Tiaga finish 5th place in the Under 8 class. PH team from Cavite is headed by Prima Santos Perez and coach Luffe Magdalaga, the PH youth team next international tournament is in Taipei, Taiwan on Dec 22-27, 2018.

"This is only the beginning. More success and memories to come," said coach Luffe Magdalaga.

The team participated through the efforts of Fide Arbiter Red Dumuk, the executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines with the support from the Philippine Sports Commission, Haven of Virtue Excellence Academy Inc., Samuel Christian College and Tanza Comprehensive National High School.-Marlon Bernardino-
