Draw keeps Garma on top of Tagaytay Asian Seniors

TAGAYTAY City---International Master Chito Garma split the point with International Master Petronio Roca to keep the lead after the seventh round of the 9th Asian Seniors Chess Championship (Standard event) at the Tagaytay International Convention Center late Friday.

The Tondo, Manila native Garma remained in the lead with 6.0 points on five wins and two draws in this prestigious, nine-round tournament being organized by the Tagaytay Chess Club on behalf of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The former University of Manila (UM) standout Garma, a habitue of Marikina Chess Club of sportsman Thaddeus Antonio "Boy Bolok" Santos Jr. is half a point ahead of Roca with only two rounds remaining.

?I?ll have to play a little more cautiously now, but I?ll go for the win if there?s an opportunity in the final two rounds," said Roca whose stint here is being supported by Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Chief Bgen. Charito ?Ching? Plaza, Deputy Director General Theo Panga and Dasmari?as City mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr.

Defending champion and tournament top seed Grandmaster Eugene Torre, meantime defeated Fide Master Adrian Ros Pacis to raise his scores to five points and keep his hopes for the title in the 34-player, ten-nation competition, hosted by the Tagaytay City government thru Cavite 7th District Cong. Abraham ?Bambol? Tolentino Jr. and Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes Tolentino.

Also with five points are National Master Cesar Caturla and Fide Master Rinas Oleg of Kazakshtan.

Caturla halved the point with International Master Angelo Young while Oleg subdued National Master Rolzon Roullo.
National Master Stewart Manaog toppled National Master Carlo Lorena to catched up Young at 6th to 7th spots with 4.5 points apiece.

The champion will receive $500 plus Grandmaster norm/results and an outright International Master title while winner in the over-65 category will get $350. The top female players will earn $300 (over-50) and over-65 ($100). Mike Lapitan is the tournament director, while Patrick Lee is the supervising arbiter.-Marlon Bernardino-
