Tough battle expected in PECA Toril, Davao executive chessfest

A wide-open battle for top honors is expected when the 2018 Alphaland National Executive Chess Championship gets underway on October 27, 2018 at the Jardin del Roca Resort in Toril, Davao City.

The San Antonio, Texas based Ernesto Malazarte who hails from Tacloban City, looms as the player to beat in the seven-round Swiss system tournament owing to his big wins in this year's World Open Under-2200 Chess Championships that was held at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown in Market Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States last July.

Organized by National Council on Disability Affairs Board of Directors Member James Gumatao Infiesto, the event, hosted by Atty. Jong Guevarra in cooperation with Alphaland Mall, offers a top purse of P10,000 and a trophy.

Other executives vying in the 10th and final leg of Alphaland National Executive Chess Championship dubbed as Philippine Executive Chess Association are seven-time Philippine Executive champion Dr. Jenny Mayor, PECA president Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe, Laguna Chess Association boss Dr. Alfredo ?Fred? Paez and Information Technology expert Joselito Cada from Metro Manila.

Bannering the local challenge (Davao turfs) in the tournament are Infiesto, Guevarra, Davao del Norte Board Member Alfredo "Fred" de Veyra, Atty. Roland Reyes businessman Glenn Paclar, Eng'r. Allan Diez, Atty. Melzar Galicia, Rey Amable, Davao del Norte provincial sports director Giovanni Gulanes, Davao del Norte executive Darwin Bermudez, Metrobank Davao bank manager Homer Rotulo, businessman Rhynan Arce, the Aton brothers, Dr. Ted Calica & Davao - based retired banker Rey Urbiztondo.
The second to fifth placers will receive P7,000, P5,000, P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro City/ Misamis will send ship captain Ronald 'El Capitan' Banaag, also the founding chairman of the Knights of the Square Table - Mind Chess, Domingo Oga, Cleto Vasquez, barangay chairman Jaime Frias, Fr. Vic Arellano, accounting officer Ismar Estrella and Eng'r. Rico Marave.
Cotabato will be represented by Lake Sebu leg champion Julius Silvederio, Grand Finals qualifiers Dillon Intila & Michael Parrenas, super organizer Lito Dormitorio, Atty. Larry Santos of the BOI, Eng'r. Domingo Dormitorio, Talib Tiboron, Eng'r. Rhymon Arce, Eng'r. Ray Salvaloza and Kidapawan City Hall's Ronald Olay.

Zamboanga will have accounting offficer Eduard Sumergido, Ateneo de Zamboanga Senior High School principal Rey Reyes, Zamboanga del Sur Dep Ed's Jezreel Lopez, educator Roumundo Edades and Grand Finals qualifier Wilhelm Joey Ardiente while Iligan City/Lanao del Norte has veteran businessman Jack Dasmarinas on the helm.
