
Big wins by Laylo, Liwagon, Arquero as PA beats PNP

GRANDMASTER Darwin Laylo, National Master lawyer Bob Jones Liwagon and Kevin Arquero toppled their respective rivals as the Philippine Army carved out a 7.5-4.5 victory over the Philippine National Police in the third round of the AFP-PNP-PCG Olympics 2018 Chess Team Championships at the PNP Sports Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City on Monday, October 8, 2018.
Laylo, ranked Corporal, playing white, defeated PO3 Jerry Tolentino in 32 moves of King's Indian defense, Saemitch variation.
Liwagon, on the other hand, ranked of Captain whose stint here is being supported by Army Judge Advocate (AJA) Colonel Maria Victoria Girao, playing black, defended well throughout the game to eke out a 42-move victory of a French defense against PINSP Ronald Agabao.
Arquero, ranked Private, meantime defeated PO1 Neptali Batucan. In other matches, LTC Lebrito Olmuguez beat PSUPT Jaime Osit Santos, PFC Antonio Chavez Jr. subdued SPO3 Ruvilo Paulin and PVT Alfred Rapanot dealt PO2 Jones Maghuyop.
LTC Perpetuo Tan Jr. split the point with PSUPT Antonieto Canete as did so 1LT Irene Rivera against PSUPT Ronilo Datu and GM candidate PVT Ronald Dableo against National Master SPO2 Ali Branzuela.
Carried the good fight for the Philippine National Police coached by Jomes Mendoza Pascua and Renato "Buboy" Abalos were PSI Horizon Villanueva who brought down CPT Marlou Daguio, PINSP Ferdinand Aterrado winner over LTC Danilo Barba and National Master PO2 Rolando Andador who shocked International Master PVT Joel Pimentel.
The Philippine Army chess team coached by Ildefonso "Ponching" Datu and National Master Carlo Rosaupan is also defeated the Philippine Airforce Chess Team, 8.5-3.5.
The Philippine National Police won earlier against the Philippine Coast Guard, 12-0, and won via default against the Philippine Navy, 12-0.
Tournament director is Maj.Libertino, Chief Arbiter is IA Patrick Lee and assisted by Arbiter NA Roy Madayag in this Standard 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment time control, using the match point system, double Round-robin format in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned tournament. -Marlon Bernardino
