JACA-MIYAGI IN ANOTHER TECHNICAL DRAW

MANILA -- The highly anticipated rematch between Filipino contender Jimrex Jaca and Japanese slugger Ryu Miyagi, ended in a thud as the fight was abruptly stopped at 2:36 in the first round after Miyagi sustained a deep cut in the forehead due to an accidental clash of heads with Jaca.

The grudge match dubbed as 'Battle of Manila II' was held at the parking lot of the iMax Theatre of the SM Mall of Asia and is one of the highlights of the ongoing 45th WBC Convention where the convention delegates headed by WBC president Jose Sulaiman trooped to the Mall to see the contest only to be disappointed of the result.

The explosive first match between the two protagonists, also held in the same venue last August 25, saw Jaca downed twice and Miyagi downed once before the contest was stopped by Referee Bruce McTavish in the 2th round due to cuts sustained by Jaca. Jaca retained his OPBF title with a controversial draw after McTavish ruled that the cuts was due to an accidental headbutt but the Japanese corner and others believed otherwise.

Last night's fight saw Jaca, who looked sluggish in the first match, boxing nicely this time and controlling the tempo of the fight in the opening minutes with stinging jabs and hitting Miyagi with a right-left combo that staggered Miyagi early on and without giving Miyagi any room to lunch his vaunted attack. The accidental clash of heads towards the dying minutes of the first round however abruptly ended in what promises to be a fine boxing performance of Jaca.

Jaca's win-loss-draw record has now dropped to 28-3-3 (13 KOs) while Miyagi is now 16-1-4 (12 KOs).

Jaca's manager, Rex 'Wakee' Salud, said after the fight that he may set another encounter between the Jaca and Miyagi in Cebu to settle an unfinished business. Salud is also looking at the possibility of sending Jaca back to the U.S. where the Negros Oriental native has gained a good following after a good showing by Jaca against pound-for-pound fighter Juan Manuel Marquez in their McAllen, Texas encounter in 2006.

"I will be talking to Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions and if Gomez can arrange fights for Jimrex in the U.S., I will send Jimrex there," Salud said.
