CEBU---GRANDMASTER MASTER (GM) John Paul Gomez of Albay Province led the four-way tie on top after six round of the 2018 Philippine National Games (PNG) Chess Championships, Rapid Open Competition at the Robinson Galleria Cebu here.
Gomez, who is fresh from winning coveted gold medal in the Standard Open Competition, has five points on four wins and two draws to join Grandmaster Darwin Laylo of Marikina City, International Master Haridas Pascua of Baguio City and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia of Quezon City in the lead.
The former stalwart of De La Salle University chess team Gomez whose stint here is backed up by Albay Gov. Al Francis C. Bichara, defeated Danny Maersk Mangao of Bacolod City in Thursday's sixth round.
Laylo, on the other hand, who won bronze medal in the Standard Open Competition, outclassed Jayson Salubre of Davao del Norte.
Garcia, for his part, halved the point with Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales of Albay Province while Pascua settlled for a truce with Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.
Antonio and Gonzales led 4.5 pointers group which includes Standard Competition silver medallist International Master Paulo Bersamina of Tandag City, National Master Elmer Sumngat of Tagbilaran City, National Master Jerad Docena of Manila and National Master Joey Albert Florendo of Zamboanga City.
In the distaff side, Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna of Albay Province beat Woman National Master Christy Lamiel Bernales of Mandaluyong City to assume solo lead after the 6th round.
Frayna played superbly to clinch the win over Bernales to raise her total 5.5 points, half point ahead with Woman Fide Master Shania Mae Mendoza of Santa Rosa City and Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia Doroy of Agusan del Sur.
Mendoza settled for a draw with Standard Competition gold medallist Woman International Master Catherine Perena-Secopito while Doroy edged Woman National Master Karen Enriquez of Mandaluiyong City.-Marlon Bernardino-
