MICIANO GRABS SOLO LEAD IN THAILAND ASIAN YOUTH CHESS

FIDE MASTER (FM) John Marvin Miciano of Davao City claimed the solo leadership in the Asian Youth Chess Championships Standard event after winning his third-round match on Tuesday at the Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Handling the advantageous white pieces, Miciano, the pride of Far Eastern University (FEU) chess team of multi-titled coach GM Jayson Gonzales, defeated ertswhile co-leader Arya Omidi of Iran after 32 moves of Sicilian defense to secure 3.0 points in the standings after third rounds in the Under-18 division.
Four players were half point away from Miciano with 2.5 points.
They are Daniel Quizon of Dasmari?as City, Cavite, Timur Nurzhanov of Kazakhstan, FM Zhihang Xu of China and FM Guha Mitrabha of India.
Quizon, the top player of Dasmari?as City, Cavite mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga and congresswoman Jenny Barzaga, halved the point with Nurzhanov, Xu crushed FM Mohammad Fahad Rahman of Bangladesh and Mitrabha toppled CM Thilakarathne G M H of Sri-Lanka.
In the Under-12 division, Mark Jay Bacojo of Dasmari?as City, Cavite shares the lead with three points along with 5 others. Bacojo, another product of Dasmari?as Chess Academy put up by Dasmari?as City, Cavite mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga and congresswoman Jenny Barzaga, toppled Dias Alimbetov of Kazakhstan.
Jerish John Velarde of Lapu-Lapu City beat Chen Kai-Chun of Chinese-Taipei to notch 2.0 points.
Velarde, a Grade 5 pupil of Marie Ernestine School, saves day for Pinoys during the rapid competition who settled for the bronze medal after the tiebreak.
His father engineer Edilberto Alve Velarde Jr. who his eyeing his third and final Fide arbiter norm here to complete his Fide arbiter status had something to say.
"We would like to thank Honarable Mayor Paz Radaza of City of Lapu-Lapu and the City council who supported our trip here in Thailand." said engineer Edilberto Alve Velarde Jr.
Meanwhile, Michael Concio Jr. of Dasmari?as City, Cavite split the point with CM Subrota Biswas of Bangladesh to create an eight-way tie for first place with 2.5 points in the Under 16-division.
Gal Brien Palasigue of Taytay, Rizal subdued CM Ruslan Sezdbekov of Kyrgyzstan and hike his total 2.0 points. Palasigue, one of the top player of multi-titled coach Ildefonso Datu of San Beda University move up to joint ninth along with five others.
Jerome Angelo Aragones of Bacoor, Cavite trounced Ashwin Hariharan of Singapore to raise his total 2.0 points in the Under 14-division. He was tied at 14th to 28th place.
In the Under-8 division Al-Basher "Basty" Buto of Cainta, Rizal, one of the recipients of the Philippine Sportswriters Association Tony Siddayao Award, was yielded to Adireddy Arjun of India. Buto remains at 2.0 points whose trip here is supported by International Baptist College (Barangay Malamig branch) President Dr. Edward M. Isidoro and IBC Principal Mrs. Florence T. Isidoro.
In the distaff side, WCM Kylen Joy Mordido of Dasmari?as City forced a fighting draw with Tannaz Azali of Iran to tally 2.5 points, the same output of WCM Yang Yijing of China, who brought downed Makhim Orazmukhammedova of Uzbekistan.
WIM Aakanksha Hagawane and WFM Arpita Mukherjee of India defeated their respective rivals to share the lead in the Girls Under 18-division with 3.0 points each.
Other member of the Philippine age group team were Daren dela Cruz of Dasmari?as, Cavite, (2 pt/ Girls 10 and under), Antonella Berthe Racasa of Marikina City (1 pt/ Girls 12 and under), Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmari?as, Cavite (2 pts./ Girls 14 and under) and Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian of Kalinga-Apayao (0.5 pt/ Girls 16 and under).
Delegation head is International Master (IM) Roel Abelgas while head coach is International Master (IM) Yves Ra?ola. The Philippine age group team is also supported by sportsman Red Dumuk, the executive director and deputy secretary-general of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by It's Chairman/President Rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., Secretary-General Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. and Treasurer Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe.
