GM Joey Antonio spearheads The Search for the next Wesley So entries

13-times Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. will be the man to beat in the The Search for the next Wesley So invitational active chess tournament set March 24 to 25, 2018 at the Alphaland Makati Place (2nd Floor) in 7232 Ayala Avenue Corner Malugay Street (near Makati Fire Station) in Makati City.

Though already 56 years old, Antonio still wields sharp form with his latest triumph as Vice Champion of the 27th World Senior Chess Championship 2017 (50+ and 65+ Open-men and women) held in Acqui Terme, Italy last November.

"I will do my very best," said Antonio, who hold a rare 30 board simultaneous chess exhibition last Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Alphaland Makati Place.

The youth challenge led by eight-year-old Al-Basher "Basty" Buto together with his team mate Michael Concio, Mark Jay Bacojo, Daniel Quizon, Jerlyn Mae San Diego and Kylen Joy Mordido, members of the Philippine team who bagged the overall championships trophy during the 18th Association of Southeast Asian Nation Age Group Chess Championship held in Grand Darul Makmur Hotel in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia last December.

According to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) treasurer Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe, a total pot prize P50,000 up for grabs putting up by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Surigao del Sur. Rep. Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. with the champion getting the lion share of P20,000.

The rate of play is 30 minutes plus five seconds delay active time control format in this two-day affair with the aim of developing the country's youth stars and helping sharpen their skills according to Atty. Orbe.

"Watch out for this big event guys! Special thanks to Cong. Prospero Pichay for spearheading this project," said Atty. Orbe, founding president of the newly-formed Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA).

Atty. Orbe added that six Digital Game Technoloy (DGT) electronics boards of Cong. Pichay for the NCFP have arrived.

"Exciting times ahead for Philippine chess," added Atty. Orbe.
All games will be broadcast live worldwide through the Youtube channel of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
