CEBU'S QUINANOLA OFF TO HOT START IN 18TH ASEAN AGE GROUP CHESS IN MALAYSIA

CEBUANA Regina Catherine Qui?anola and Ilagan, Isabela bet Ruth Joy Vinuya were off to blazing start by winning their opening round matches at the start of 18th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship held at the Grand Darul Makmur Hotel in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia on Sunday.

Qui?anola defeated Nur Faiqah Aminuddin of Malaysia while Vinuya subdued Lanida Dahalan of Malaysia to create an eight way tie for first place that include Diajeng Theresa Singgih of Indonesia, WCM Chua Jia-Tien, Ong Zhiqian Singgih, Zulkefli Nur Irdina Batrrisya, Sum Sze Lok and Tang En Xin Esther of Malaysia in the Girls 14 and under.

"The first round is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone on how you?re going to perform,? said Philippine executive champion Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe, director of teh National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.

In the Boys 14 and under, Daniel Quizon of Dasmarinas, Cavite, toppled Zakiyuddin Muhd Haziq Izzuddi of Malaysia while Justine Diego Mordido of Las Pinas City trounced Rajan Kamaleswran of Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Antonella Berthe Murillo Racasa of Marikina City split the point with Frida Nadine Fellicia of Indonesia. She joined Fellicia in a tie for 7th to 8th place with half point in the Girls 10 and under.

So impressive is Ruelle "Tawing" Canino of Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City who beat compatriot and Asian Youth gold medalist Daren Dela Cruz to open her bid in a bright note in the Girls 10 and under which attracted 13 age groupers.

Other players who won their first round assignments were Nurul Huda Zulkornain, WCM Farah Liyana Salihin , Abd Manan Khayra Imanina, Aina Afrina Ahmad Suffian and Murfiqah Zulaikha Mohd Zaki of Malaysia.

In the Boys 10 and under, Dwayne Pahaganas of Escalante, City Negros Occidental nipped Arif Danish Khamarul Ariffin of Malaysia, Jayson Jacobo Tiburcio of Marikina City crushed Megat Mohd Khushairi Megat Za of Malaysia, Karlycris Clarito Jr. of Pasig City waylaid Mohd Fadzil Ahmad Muqri Muhaiin of Malaysia and Cedric Kahliel Abris of Mandaluyong City dealt Muhd Shoair Muhd Izz Anaqi of Malaysia.

In the Boys 12 and under, Mark Jay Bacojo of Pasig City toppled Darshevintharan Manhokaran of Malaysia as well Gabriel John Umayan of Davao City subdued Muhammad Alif Irfan Azmi of Malaysia and Michael Concio Jr. of Los Banos, Laguna defeated Kundan Dharmapuri of Australia. Wesley Jovan Magbanua of Davao City was yielded to Mukhriez Shah Mahmood Shah of Malaysia.
In the Boys 8 and under, Al-Basher Buto of Cainta outplayed countryman Ruslan Pamplona of Pasil, Iloilo , Vincent Ryu Dimayuga of Batangas smashed Rafiq Al-Hafiz Rosmaini of Malaysia.

In the Girls 8 and under, Mecel Angela Gadut of Candon City took the scalped of Hafiya Imana Zaba of Malaysia to share the lead with Afiqah Zahra Salihin, Mohd Zakiyuddin Nur Fatnin Uz and Eidil Khadijah Zainal Abidin of Malaysia. The game between Jirah Floravie Cutiyog of General Trias, Cavite and Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Sta. Rosa, Laguna ended into a fighting draw.

Other Filipino age groupers who won their Round 1 assignments were WCM Kylen Joy Mordido of Las Pinas and Bea Mendoza in the Girls 16 and under; Dale Bernardo of Angeles, Pampanga, Jeth Romy Morado of Quezon City, Brylle Gever Vinluan of Baguio and Jayson Danday of Dasmarinas, Cavite in the Boys 20 and under; WFM Allaney Jia Doroy of Surigao del Sur, WCM Mira Mirano of Aklan and Ynna Sophia Canape of Marikina City in the Girls 20 and under.
