
Pinoy woodpusher from Quezon City makes waves in Singapore

A Singapore-based Filipino is making waves in the field of chess as he makes a name for himself in the Lion City.
1996 Philippine Junior Champion National Master (NM) Roberto Suelo Jr.scored 7.5 points in nine rounds to cop first place in the just concluded Thomson Chess Fiesta-Cup Rapid event which was held recently in Singapore.
Suelo currently works at chess teacher in Singapore. Born and raised in Quezon City, the former son of a shoe maker is best remembered helping the Rizal Technological University (RTU) Mandaluyong woodpushers to the national championships title during the national inter-collegiate in the mid 90's.
Three players tallied seven points and were tied at second place, Heng Zheng Kai and Sean Christian Goh of Singapore and Joshua Juaneza of the Philippines.
"Once again Filipino woodpusher proved that we can shine in chess and that Roberto (Suelo) did, I hope that we should give chess more attention in our country so that we can produce more champions in abroad," said Reynaldo "Eric" Acosta, a confidante of Suelo, and top chess player from Baseco, Tondo, Manila.
In the Challenger section, another Filipino bet Jomel Ortiz won third-overall after the tie break. He hass superior quotient against fellow seven pointers Samuel Ho Khai Sheng, Xin Hong Kai, and Bradley Tan Zhiren of Singapore.
Jay Azel Chua Tze of Singapore went undefeated in nine outings to bring home the crown. At solo second place is Lucas Auyeung Chi Hung of Singapore with 7.5 points.
NM Suelo and Ortiz, are both active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) in Singapore. Another top Filipino player who is also active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) is US-based Grandmaster Julio Catalino Sadorra.
