Arizona Boxing News & Notes with Don Smith: BKB 3-6/27, 3 Boxing Movies & Mailbag Response

Boxing Fans, On Saturday Morning (6/27) I will depart from Phoenix and head for Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas Nevada to watch BKB #3 later in the evening of the same day. Depending on whom you listen to; BKB stands for Bare Knuckles Boxing or Big Knockout Boxing. I would rule out the Bare Knuckles Boxing description because all fighters wear a pair of 8 ounce gloves. The results are not recorded by the standard boxing industry and BKB is a PPV event offered by Direct TV and carried on Channel 501 in Arizona at $29.99 for standard fare and kick in another $10.00 for HD. At this late date; call ASAP if BKB is something that tickles your sports fancy. If you go or stay home and view; this isn?t your grandfather?s sport of boxing: No Ring, No Ropes and a promise of more knockouts. Other interesting facts, each round are 2 minutes and all bouts are scheduled for seven rounds. The fight is staged in a pit; i/2 size of a normal boxing ring and yes there are ring girls.
Most states air BKB, but call your Direct TV carrier for specific channel numbers. Here is the official boxing lineup Card for BKB 3 which airs 10 PM EST on Saturday, 6/27. All Bouts are subject to change.

Mailbag Response: USA Boxing Arizona President Jacob Magallanez is a frequent contributor to this column and recently he sent an email stating that he is receiving feedback from coaches across the country and they?re continuing to request that headgear not only be used, but that it is foolish to disregard HG in amateur boxing.
This is in response to a perceived movement to ban headgear in amateur boxing and although USA Boxing Arizona is against any such move; the organization doesn?t have the authority to override decisions made by AIBA President Wu who appears to be in favor of removing headgear in Olympic competition.
After a little research, I asked Dr. Loren Partlo to address the value of wearing headgear while boxing, unfortunately his scholarly and detailed defense of wearing protective headgear was so lengthy, I had to hold off on the printing of his passionate defense for the merits of headgear.
Dr. Partlo is the highly acclaimed boxing coach of Olivet College (Olivet Michigan) and he has been involved in boxing for 35 years. He is the vice president of the U.S. Intercollegiate Boxing Association (USIBA). He has been the Assistant Director of Boxing and boxing instructor at West Point Military Academy. Dr. Partlo earned a B.A. in Biology and Education from Olivet College, A Masters in School Administration from Central Michigan University and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the same institution of higher learning.
I asked the Dr. Partlo to write 3-4 paragraphs listing the virtues of wearing headgear and he returned what could be classified as a thesis or term paper. We will work together to see if we can condense his report or presen itt as a series. Thank you for your indulgence.
Three boxing Flicks: Before I mention three boxing flicks released this year or 2016 le me reminisce and mention several of my personal boxing movie favorites. Some people may be shocked that I don?t include any of the Rocky flicks, but you can include them on your list if you want. When We Were Kings: Ali vs. Forman 1996-Girlfight 2000-Million Dollar Baby 2004-Requiem For A Heavyweight1962- Cinderella Man 2005- Raging Bull (of course) 1980.
Here are three new boxing themed flicks getting some buzz. I hope to eventually review all three: Bleed For This, a film Documentary about Vinnie Paz, two time world champion who broke his neck in an horrific car accident and came back to fight. It was to be released this year, but very hard to find. Southpaw: strong cast and interesting trailer. Release date is July 24 at most local and National theatres. Hands of Stone: The story of Duran vs. Leonard in their two meetings. Usher portrays Leonard while newcomer Roberto Ramirez plays Duran. This flick was to be released this year, but there is talk that it might be held until 2016. See you at the movies.
Random Thoughts: I owe Acting Interim Racing Director Rudy Casillas an apology for identifying him as Rudy Castillo?.Edward Ceballos (Fuentes Gym) was set to make his professional debut on the Wild West Boxing Promotions 6/26shot at the Clarion Hotel in Tucson until the Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission vetoed his opponent for reasons unknown to this columnist. Ceballos hope to catch onto a card in July or August?..Jose Herrera 2-0 is looking for work and his two impressive knockout wins should open a few doors?. Wild West Boxing is hoping to return to the Clarion in Tucson for a July show, but nothing is definite.
Fight Hard Promotions next show will either be staged on July 25 or August 7 in Glendale, Arizona at the Renaissance Hotel; it won?t be both dates and the company is hoping to lure Light Heavyweight David Benavidez and possible television coverage for the nest Fight Hard Show.?...Arizona teenage Olympic Hopeful Ariel Arismendez lost a close bout in Colorado Springs Colorado at the Olympic Trials competition. She still has a chance to make the U.S.A. team, but in the immortal words of legendary NFL Coach and owner Al Davis: she needs to ?Just Win, Baby, Win.? There is no margin for error! Iron Boy 23 is scheduled for July ds25 at the Celebrity Theatre and the next BMBP show is scheduled for August 29 n Phoenix?Next Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission meeting is penciled in for Monday July 13 and it is open to the public?.Former boxing Mentor Damien Stone faces Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Daniel Kiley on July 13 (Monday at 8:30 AM) at a Conference hearing over sexual solicitation charges stemming back to the spring of 2014. He is charged with soliciting a female undercover female police officer who told Stone she was 16 and he allegedly said ?not a problem.? Until Next Time!
