The name of Bong Obera which has surfaced regularly in connection with the sending of Filipino boxers to Thailand where they are often mauled in blatant mismatches and are sneaked out of the country without the necessary approval of the Games and Amusments Board was recently taken into custody by the NBI for illegal recruitment.
Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today learned that Obero whose real name is Ranilo Terrania was caught during an NBI operation where Obero was set to receive money from one of the victims of his illegal recruitment. The incident reportedly took place some three weeks ago at the MACRO in Quezon City.
The report indicated that Obero’s partner identified as Mar Vargas who was driving their Innova attempted to ram into an NBI agent who shot Vargas in the head, killing him instantly. Obero was arrested and detained at the NBI headquarters.
However, GAB chairman Eric Buhain disclosed that Obero was no longer in NBI custody and there was no indication on how or why he was released.
