Lonesome Filipino fighter Rey Perez suffers another defeat in Mexico

It?s not uncommon for Filipino fighters to land and lose in the boxing-crazy country of Mexico. Filipino featherweight Rey Perez (19-6, 4 KO) has fought and lost in Mexico twice in the past against a former world champ (Hugo Cazares in January 2013) and an undefeated fighter (Andres Gutierrez in July 2013).
Last night, Perez suffered his third defeat in that country against another undefeated fighter, a TKO loss to Edivaldo Ortega (19-0-1, 10 KOs) in Ortega?s hometown of Tijuana, Baja California in Mexico.
Perez traveled from Manila to Mexico on his own this week, without a trainer, without a cut man, without his manager or promoter, even without necessary tools of the trade like hand wraps or bandages that he needs as a boxer.
?Sabi po kasi susunod kinabukasan ng flight ko, e hindi naman nakasunod.? (They said they will follow, but they were not able to.) answered Perez when this Philboxing.com writer asked him about the matter before his weigh-in Friday.
The matter was brought to this writer?s attention by US based Filipino coach Marvin Somodio who noticed that his fellow Filipino is by his lonesome in a foreign country.
?Magisa lang siya sa presscon, kawawa naman.? (He was by himself in the presscon, it is pitiful.)
Somodio is also in Tijuana for his fighter Antonio De Marco who headlined Saturday?s card in a Zanfer Promotions event.
?Wala pa mga tape at hand wraps para sa laban. Gusto ko sana tulungan sa corner kaya lang magkasunod sila ng laban ni De Marco.? (He even does not have tape and hand wraps for the fight. I want to help him in the corner but his bout and De Marco?s bout is next to each other.) Somodio relayed to this writer. He gave Perez his extra hand wraps and tapes.
Perez was without any representation to check on his opponent?s scale during the weigh-in last Friday. He asked fellow boxer Drian Francisco to help in his corner last night against the undefeated hometown fighter. Francisco was in Tijuana to watch the fights according to Perez. But Francisco is a boxer and not an experienced or a licensed trainer.
Perez, who hails from Sindangan, Zamboanga Norte in the Philippines was knocked down twice in his fight last night by Ortega. The first knockdown came in the 2nd round from a body shot and another in the 5th which was from a low blow which was not counted as knockdown because of the infraction.
Ortega dominated Perez from the opening bell, pummeling him with shots to the body and the head after the first knockdown but the game Filipino did not give up easily.
After the knockdown in the 5th, Perez did not answer the bell to fight in the 6th. He stood up and approached Ortega and instead raised his opponent?s hand. The referee and officials officially ruled the fight as a TKO win for Ortega in the 6th. The official time of stoppage was 10 seconds of the 6th round.
This is Perez?s third straight defeat in Mexico in the last 20 months. He is 0-4 outside of the Philippines, losing once in Osaka, Japan in 2011. He lost his last fight against fellow Filipino Carlo Magali in Mandaluyong, Philippines last June and is now 2-4 since last year.
According to Perez, he is being promoted by Naris Singwancha, a Thai promoter who also promotes in the Philippines.
