Adones Aguelo of Maasin City, Leyte put forth a gallant but losing effort Saturday night against highly ranked hometown fighter, Sergio Thompson of Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Thompson knocked Aguelo once in the 6th round and nabbed the win with a Unanimous Decision victory in the scorecards of their 10 round Super Featherweight contest in Thompson?s hometown of Chetumal at the Estado Nachan Ka?an.

The scores at ringside were 97-92, 96-93 and 96-93 in favor of Thompson in a bout that was shown live in the United States by Fox Deportes.

Thompson, ranked a high number 2 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) won the battle of the jabs in the first two rounds, keeping his Filipino opponent at bay with his jabs and body work.

Aguelo, now 21-10-2 with 13 KOs in his career, took control of the next three rounds, when he found his mark with his hooks and uppercuts against the Mexican.

But Thompson, who is fighting in front of his hometown fans, took control of the 6th with his jabs and floored Aguelo with a hard right hook in the final seconds of the round. Aguelo, shaken but up on his feet, beat the referee?s count and was saved by the bell from further assault by his opponent.

Thompson maintained control of the remaining four rounds except in the 9th where Aguelo hurt him with a couple of hooks which he took well. He smartly moved around the ring in the 10th and final round, avoiding Aguelo who is trying to salvage a win in the last 2 rounds with a knockout in enemy territory.

Thompson improved his lot to 30 wins and 3 defeats with 26 KOs and positioned himself for another title run in the future. He lost his last attempt at a world championship belt against WBC Super Featherweight champ, Takashi Miura of Japan last year in Cancun. He has since then, won three consecutive fights.
