CHICAGO -- After failing to land prized free agent Carmelo Anthony, who opted to return to the New York Knicks for a max deal worth at least $122 million, the Chicago Bulls snatched the next best thing.

Pau Gasol will be a Chicago Bull beginning next season, choosing the Windy City over several suitors that included the Dallas Mavericks, the Oklahoma City Thunder and his previous team, the Los Angeles Lakers, among others.

"It hasn't been easy. After meditating a lot on it I've chosen to play with the Chicago Bulls. Looking forward to this new chapter in my career," the 7-foot Spaniard said through Twitter.

Terms of Gasol's are still being ironed out as the Bulls need to move assets to make room for the 275-pound center's salary. With Gasol on board, the Bulls are likely to release power forward Carlos Boozer via the amnesty provision to clear his $16.8 million salary off the books, ESPN reported.

Gasol spent five seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies before moving to the Lakers where he won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010. He averaged 17.4 points and 9.7 rebound in 60 games with the Lakers last season. (Homer D. Sayson)
