PLDT-ABAP NATIONAL BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 OPENS IN DIGOS CITY

DIGOS CITY, DAVAO DEL SUR - The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and PLDT National Boxing Championships 2014 opened at Digos City, Davao del Sur Wednesday at the City Gymnasium.
Congressman Manny Pacquiao, who bankrolled the expenses of the national boxing tourney was the keynote speaker and guest of honor.
"I could have done it in Sarangani or Gensan but I purposely hold this championships here in Digos City because this is the place where I started my career as an amateur boxer," said the fighting lawmaker.
The national championships opened just a day after the 47th Founding Anniversary of the province of Davao del Sur. Governor Claude Bautista and Digos City Mayor Joseph Pe?as welcomed all the visitors including this writer.
ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson briefed the audience of the tournament rules and formally declared the games open.
The preliminary bouts started right away after the opening ceremony. Here are the results:
Rennieboy Ferraren of Zamboanga won by unanimous decision over Sergio Villagonzalo of Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat.
Dhan Ariel Adolfo of Pacman Digos outpointed Rovemil Son Dakila of General Santos by split decision.
J Mar Jaga of Bago outscored Nenito Anislag of Cagayan de Oro by UD.
Jonjie Maritana of Tayabas prevailed over Shaquel Miole of Maasin City by UD.
Marco Pumar of Cebu City stopped Danny Boy Tan of La Union by TKO.
John Paul Bentoso of Pacman Digos triumphed over Cresan Paul Dicamos of Bago City by UD.
Jay R Arcilla of Mandaluyong defeated Bonnie Lamberte of Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat.
There were two exhibition bouts featuring four Philippine team boxers who were bound for international fights to Kazakhstan and China. Ian Clark Bautista won over Rey Saludar while Junnel Cantancio defeated Charlie Suarez.
There were 19 participating teams namely Cagayan de Oro, Pacman Team A and B, General Santos City, Tibagan, Mandaluyong, Leyte Province, Sorsogon, Malaybalay, Camiguin, Sultan Kudarat, Calinan of Davao City, San Fernando of La Union, Maasin City, Tayabas City, Bago City, Saba of Occidental Mindoro, Cebu City, Gingoog City and Zamboanga City.
